Again, super pro job here in all areas. You are a fantastic singer and put out a very nice video. I wish I could do these kinds of vids. You kind of seem like a Kardashian with actual talent  What are your career plans? You seem like much more than a hobbyist type. Whatever your intent you are very talented and well poised for whatever you would want to pursue.

Hey Joe, I came into this thread in mid discussion. I did listen to your clip but I did not read all of the posts that came before the Singer vs Coach issue. Just enough to get the jist of things.
Most of the time here the reviews are based on where a person is in his training, and that seems to have been the general review standpoint at the beginning of this thread. If there are no major faults in pitch and tone then focus ends up on presentation: if things seem odd or something just doesn't "Click" for some reason.
There was no mention that you had a program or anything(in the beginning), But, for some reason those who do(have a program or teach), end up getting a more detailed critique. Other members and a few on line coaches have given lessons while they themselves are still in training. I do not see why that should have been brought up to begin with.
I also find myself having issues with a reinterpretation of a famous song. That kind of bugs me a little because I also will change a song to fit my personality and style. The problem is not usually of reinterpretation but that the new melody/tone/emotion does not fit with the musical background.
When working on a song I will often search for how others have presented the song. See/hear what works in my opinion and what doesn't. When you find the same song presented by different artists you will discover that almost everything has changed in one degree or another. From instruments to drum beat/tempo to the melody itself. When it is good, everything fits together and seems as one unit. When it is bad there are inconsistencies.

I am not sure where I was going with this......... too many starts and stops while typing............ anyway welcome to the forum and I look forward to hearing more of your interpretations.

1). Experience as a voice coach. Many years, thousands of students.
2). Published: blogs, books, video productions.
3). Innovation in new vocal ideas and understanding of common ones.
4). Ability to PROPERLY explain what your talking about and demonstrate it.
5). An understanding of the fundamental physiology and acoustics of singing.
6). Master Class experience and teacher of teachers.
7). A Master's Degree in Music from the University of Miami and over 15 years of private study from renown coaches.
8). A proven demonstration and ability to sing well.

These are a few things that would characterize the resume and experience of someone that could rightfully call themselves an "expert" in the practice of voice technique training and song coaching for singers.

I post in a critique section expecting a critique. Sometimes we are not good judges of our own sound and choices. Family and friends can not be trusted to give critique and advice on our choices either. They either want to encourage us through undeserved praise or give us bad critiques out of jelousy. Better to be reviewed by those who have no stake in our emotional well being and will give an honest opinion, Either good or bad.
No, it should not be a judgement of some ones character, But you would post something that you have just started working on to find out if you are on a path that seems pleasing to most or not, then adjust as necessary.
I would much rather have people on this forum give me a heads up that my choices for a songs presentation are bad than to present that song to a live group and be booed off stage.(This is not about the song presented here, just my view on the critique section itself)

Thank you so much Ronws. I had a rough day yesterday after reading Kevin's comments, but I took them all to heart and had a great night training and singing. I didn't mention this, but in posting this song I'm taking a step toward over-coming a life-long fear of being heard singing by others. I'm now on the wrong side of 50 and feeling a "now or never" thing and am working hard to grow my voice to it's fullest.
As a student, I'm coming from the place of singing WAY too hard, pushing too hard, trying to "pull chest" to the ceiling and so forth. I'm sure that strain can be heard in this performance. So the past 2.5 years of training have been all about backing that down. My false folds used to slam shut around Eb4 and each half-step after that was brutal to "push" through. I'm maybe half-way to where I care to be and I've only in the past couple months found how to navigate the passage while keep the false folds retracted. It's been amazing, and I'm not yet used to singing in this way, and when I sing a song I've sang for a long time, the old habits are more likely to jump in.
Over the coming weeks I'll submit a few songs from other artists and I'll make a better attempt to stay close to the original and to communicate the lyric better. Thanks again.

Hi Joe, I have listened to your track and read the comments by our forum members. Lots of great advice here and I can tell you from my band experience etc when you are doing any cover material from ICONIC singers lol people always expect it to sound just like the original artist. In some cases that may be kind of possible. There are certain singers with timbers and basic range similarities that make it easier to sing very close to the original artist. I agree with Roberts posts about striving and improving. There are songs I spent many years building the basic instrument up to a point where the execution was finally right. If you look through past pages I have many songs on here from very iconic singers and you can see on some I succeed more than others but I am always trying to improve as a vocalist and that shows in my own Original material maybe better than singing covers although even there I can see improvement on songs I tried to sing as a newbie etc. Never be discouraged, there was very little in my early singing that would have made other people think I should stick with it haha.

Again, I liked it as an artistic endeavor. Is it a world class rendition on this song? Maybe not. You have a good voice and could conceivably shine well on other songs. I don't think my voice is good on every song, even ones I enjoy singing. I was working on a cover of "Jaded" by Aerosmith. I really like that song but I just don't sound like Steven and so I may never share that one.
But I could imagine you singing in public, yes, to applause, even.

Hi Kevin. Thank you for the feedback. I don't at all expect to be coddled. Treated with courtesy, yes. Coddled, no. And I absolutely appreciate what you wrote. As I wrote above, I can sing this song 100 different ways. This is the way I chose and it didn't settle well with you and others. That's okay. It's useful to know.
I know Robert deleted a portion of your post, but I'd like to comment on that anyway, since you took a swipe at me and others saw it. I hope Robert allows me to reply.
I am not a performance coach nor have I ever claimed to be. I don't conduct private lessons of any kind and have never claimed as much. I've only just recently begun to create and offer an inexpensive, in-home vocal training course for people who can't afford private lessons with someone like yourself. I don't promote or link to my course in my signature line here, as others do. I may one day.
I've lived in South America for 15 years. I'm surrounded by all kinds of young people who love to sing and want to sing better and can't afford private lessons. I realize that this is a problem for many singers all over the world, even in developed countries like the U.S. They are who I want to help most. And it's a great course. The feedback from my first few students has been excellent. I'm adding new material all the time.
Also know that my voice connects over four octaves, from C2 to C6, though it's still rough at the edges. My intent is to fully develop the three octaves from G2 to G5 and this is becoming an easy siren for me to do, getting better by the day. I can do it across different vowels, with varied larynx positions, varied amounts of resonation, volume, and so forth.
I'm first and foremost a a student of the voice. I openly demonstrate my voice to students and prospective students, explain my approach to teaching the voice, and encourage them to learn from other coaches and courses. I make it clear to them that I'm also one of the students at my school. There is full disclosure and I'm not the slightest bit ashamed of providing vocal training workouts for people to use at home and I stand by the quality of the course.

Ellise, the great thing about where your at is the incredible voice you have developed at such an early age. I had to sing on stage for quite awhile before I feel I developed my onstage persona. I am naturally kinda sci-fi geek guy lol and can be very silly but to take command of the stage took me a bit. Although I can already see the improvement in that department in your case and you still have time to grow into that kind of thing Still super proud of the great work you doing and putting yourself out there in these competitions is a great way to develop your "non-vocal" sklllllllz

I am now beginning to gain the confidence to start taking on tough songs.  I wish I could get more chord closure on the F#5 in this recording(would love for it to sound more full).  It is also a very tough vowel for me("E" vowel).
This kind of singing is out of my comfort zone. Always tough to get the right emotion when one has to sing on themes like war, death, evil etc
Thanks to folks who listen and drop in a sentence or two.
