I´ve just heard the clip and honestly I have no idea of what you are even trying to do there
Sing a song, these scales, done in this manner, will do you no good.

Hi everyone. Here is two songs of me singing. One pop classical and one classical. I haven't done any singing in many years and I got called by my former vocal coach if I could step in on short notice and we had two 1,5 rehearsals and I did these two songs. My range singing classical is usually around E2 to C5 Any feedback is appreciated. One teacher said I'm actually a tenor and that I am doing something unnatural with my voice. One said I'm a lyrical baritone One said I'm a low baritone And one said I can develop to a bass baritone. Links:

Singing is hard to write about, especially when it is about tone. I do not really hear anything wrong with the tone, but then again it all depends on what style of music is behind the singing.
In these examples you are singing word for word with distinct stops between each word, like each word is a separate note. In some styles that is good but with others it is bad. Think of singing in terms of phrasing. There is not a hard stop between words but a continuous flow, unless of course if the song calls for that.
The voice is another instrument. When you are playing a lead on the guitar do you stop each note before you play another? or are you playing four or five notes in succession with some of the notes sustaining? At the same time you are also expressing an emotion with your voice. Using dynamics to express the feeling. When you are happy and expressing love for someone do you yell at them like you are mad? Not if you want them to return the feeling. You use a soft tone when expressing love and a Harsh tone when expressing Pain or anger. Phrasing can be thought about like that also. Slow and melodic for expressing love and quick and blunt for anger or pain.
These are just guides to give you a different way of thinking about singing.

Hello. I'm mostly a producer and a instrumentalist. I've been getting frustrated lately because the music I produce needs vocals but I can't really sing that well and don't have a very good ear for vocal production.
I would hire a singer but I dislike the idea of having to "piggyback" on someone else's voice just to release music.
I would hire a voice teacher but I'm a broke college student at the moment who can't really afford consistent back to back lessons
As a result of all this I'm trying to learn how to sing. I have an ear for pitch from playing guitar & piano for years. Not so much for vocal tone though. Sometimes I'll sing and even though the pitch is right the vocal still sounds bad. What is the cause of this and what can I do to fix it? Here's some examples of me singing. Theres a cover included but it has background music so the "clyp" links you can hear my voice better.

@Robert Lunte Wow, I completely uploaded the wrong song. I was a bit out of it, but here you go.
Sorry about that, thanks! You gave me pointers and some advice on the earlier version of this song I posted, was a bit boring before.

    Hey Shoe,
LOL... that is SO Gothic bro... funny that you don't sort of know that.
    Thats ok, its cool.
Great song... I would give you the same advise I gave you on the other song. Try to jump up and sing higher on a few parts for contrast.

Hi all. I took your advice from the last time I posted this song and made some improvements. As far as vocals go, I tried out your guys' suggestion and screamed/yelled the final chorus (Sounds like I summoned my inner Kurt Cobain) I've never screamed/yelled while I sang before, so it wasn't easy and took a few takes until I was semi-satisfied with the performance. Any tips on how I could improve that and make it sound even better?
Also, the song in general is more dynamic as the previous review stated that the song just was lacking change and excitement, so I added louder and more distorted guitar parts, crashing cymbals, drum fills, drum drop outs at the bridge, etc. Just in general touched it up and improved it on a second run through making the song more aggressive to better reflect my bands' more raw and heavier live sound. If it can be improved further, let me know!

    Cheers!

    Hi all,
So yeah, I wrote a new song. Been very creative lately. Anyway, this one is very personal to me and wasn't easy to write but I needed to finally do it, it's about losing someone I loved tremendously to drug addiction, severe depression, suicide. This is my way of coping with it. I haven't talked about it since to anyone, I almost couldn't even finish the song and literally cried after I finished it. I'm so happy I was able to do this and do this song.
Since this song is very special and emotional to me, I'm REALLY trying to capture the emotions through my singing, and let the listener feel what I'm feeling through emotion and lyrics combined with the music.
One thing I'm doing that I've never done before is yell singing? I don't know what to call it, I usually sing very subdued as you can tell from my earlier stuff, but the chorus line "I watched as you slowly blew away, I watch you, as you just drift away" was the most important to me, so I layered it with singing louder, and at the last chorus I full on yelled almost all vocal takes. I REALLY wanted to capture something emotional, raw, where you could hear either the pain, anger, or something in that yell but I don't think I nailed it.

Please tell me how I could improve that yell at the end, and if any other parts of the singing are off or not "feeling" right for what this song means. Thanks guys/girls.

Hi Robert, thank you for the review and the welcome!
I have no idea what a vocal fry is, i'll look into this.
Had no idea about the gothic vibe, that's odd i'm about the most hipster guy you'd ever wanna meet, typical dirty Echo Park hipster with blue hair. Definitely have never listened to goth before! Interesting.

I'll play around with some vocal stuff where you suggested and will check out the lesson package you provided. I am a bit poor as of right now, living that starving artist's life but I'll see what I can do!

    Hi!

Here's another song, my most recent that I wrote a couple of days ago.
Same vocal concerns that I posted in my previous recent thread for the song: (All The Good Things) that post explains in more detail my concerns and everything, basically just concerned about the vocals because I'm a new singer and a new songwriter. Any thoughts / tips / criticism / advice / or anything you'd like to add would be highly appreciated!
The song gets a bit repetitive after the bridge, I wrote the song in about 3-4 hours and just got lazy and impatient. Definitely going to change the bridge to add variety/dynamics.

A very generous response from Draven. Nice. Thanks for your help Draven.
    Jeanette, I listened to "Hallelujah".
It is apparently clear that you have a lovely voice with great potential.
    Two things:
1). Smule is a fun tool, really a toy to use for singing. With your passion for singing, you should step up and learn how to make a better production to feature your singing. I recommend one of the "everything you need" recording kits found at our The Vocal Gear Store. click on Recording. See the Focusrite kit.
2). You voice is pretty, but no doubt you could benefit from more musculature and strength. That would come from belt or TA ( a muscle ), strengthening workouts.

    Hi there,
I am new here, and was hoping to get some feedback regarding the areas of my singing that need the most work.
I do not have much vocal training, but am generally regarded as having a "good voice". I want to improve the areas where I am lacking (pitch? power? tempo/rhythm? tone quality? how?), from a professional perspective!
    See my clips here:
    https://www.smule.com/JeanetteLucie
I realize there are a number of clips:
Perhaps two representative ones would be Jar of Hearts and Perfume; the rest are less practiced.

I listened to Perfume. I tried Jar of Hearts, but it's hard to hear you over the other voice.
You had an ear for pitch and a natural pleasant tone to your voice, but your fundamentals are all a bit off for singing. I'll get to that more in a minute. Yuo have a lot of great potential, and I can hear a great singing voice in there just waiting to be utilized in full. Please don't take my review as harsh. Text alone can feel that way very easily. My hope is to help you, not critisize you.
You need to be training your voice. Not doing so is holding back a lot of your potential. I highly recommend starting with The Four Pillars of Singing and seeking a vocal coach with student success in the style you're going for. Not success as in career success necessarily, but in learning to sing that style well - contenporary rather than classical.
There's only so much I can address in text without you having a coach or doing a lesson with me, Robert, or other coaches here. The first thing I hear is your placement is lending itself to more speech vowels than singing vowels. There are a couple of ways to get you started toward proper placement of singing vowels. Start by making a soft "K" sound while breathing in. That spot your tongue hits the roof of your mouth is where you want to point your vowels, letting the soft palate do most of the work for you. Higher notes will feel like they go deeper into the soft palate as well, and if it makes sense in text, you want to allow your vowels to shade back from that soft "K" spot, adding deeper vowels in the soft palate along with the deeper note (deeper in the soft palate, but higher in pitch). Besides willing them into the soft "K" spot, you can also bare your teeth, or smile. This helps naturally lift the voice. Additionally, when first starting to do this "lift" of the voice resonance and vowels, it may help to place a finger on your lower lip and try to make your voice go up and over it. This is called "over the pencil", as it's modified from putting a pencil between your teeth and sing up and over it with only vowels.
Your TA (chest voice musculature) strength and breath support are a bit weak, which is a HUGE area holding back your voice. GRanted, without proper placement, trying to add these in will only get you yelling, rather than singing with more power. There are ways to strengthen these but it would likely take a lesson to really show you how, since you need get a proper feeling for the basics befroe we can truly help with adjustments.
One thing you can do right now is bridging and connecting. This will help you gain better control over the musculature, placement, and movement of the voice. It's arguably the most important thing to learn for singing besides pitch. I talk mroe about that in the video below. To predicate my videos, I truly only put these out there to help people get a feel for proper sensations of the voice. There are things to do from there that make it even easier. For instance, instead of opening the jaw wide to help TA engagement, this is better for a more controlled vowel: raise the embouchure (lift and bite), narrow vertically, and push the tongue slightly forward into the bottom teeth (which gives extra support to the TA muscles). OPening the jaw may help you learn to turn on the TA muscles and sing higher notes, but narrowing is what allows you control from there.

Can you pick one song for us to review your voice on? Most of us, if not all of the coaches here, don't have time to go through 5 songs. I was going to try, but had to keep pushinng it back in my schedule.
