That's a lot better. And, asided from the forced vibrato, you are singing close to how Bruce sounds. On the highest parts, this may sound counterintuitive, but you can free up some "thickness" by letting the note get thinner. Let it focus in its place of resonance and you will get an increase in volume without pushing.

As for vibrato, most every voice has a natural vibrato that comes out when you are NOT pushing air. This comes from regulating your air pressure or speed, whichever mental image works for you. So, even though the highest part may sound weak to you, it is the right place to start from. And your voice will last for decades.

I have sang this song a million times... I can help you with it for sure... if you took a quick lesson with me, I could show you how to get through it.

I don't either... I don't know how to "hit these high notes" without damaging my vocal cords either... thats why Im not going to "hit those high notes"... hint!  As long as you perceive frequency as something that is "up/down & low/high"... you will always have some problems... part of your problem is the mental imagery about what "high notes" really are and are not. This may sound esoteric, but its not... there is an objective reality to this and it involves understanding the acoustics of the human voice when singing... Truly, the best thing you could do is make a small investment and get in front of me or any good coach and let us talk to you and work with you on this tune... its an easy fix for a good coach that can actually get in front of you... looking for "free secret tips" online isn't going to make lasting, tangible results...

I got a chance to listen to your Evernecence. Great job.

    This

1:33 - 1:45... nice work... good intonation and dynamics.

2:00 - 2:06, ... good belting... I would say try to capture this sound and feeling on more of your song. My ears tell me it needs a touch more anchoring, more bigger larynx movements.

3:02 - 3:13 ... another example of more M1 engagement, more chesty, modal voice...

    - Move a highly efficient and amplified horizontal embouchure position.
    - squeeze the glottis harder with precision, isolated contractions... INTO...
    - ... and larynx that is anchored and giving you some "boom"...
    - My ears tell me that on the chorus, if you shaded in a bitter "aw" as in "law"...it will nudge your larynx into a great position.

Try it and lets hear another crack at it!

Overall, its good, keep going... train to make your belts stronger...

Controlled Glottal attacks into forward resonant vowels would be a great singercize routine for you.

    Hope this helps...

Well done, I think you should change the recording mix a little softer and release it as a cover. This is really good.

Thank you for the quick and detailed response Robert!
I've been training with the 4P for about 3 to 4 months now, I'm not entirely certain as to how long.
What helped most is that Pillars explains clearly how the voice works without alot of ambiguity. The abundance of excercises is also great, as I have a good work ethic if I may say so myself, but before Pillars I had no clue on what or how to train my voice. I always thought I was born with a flat, dull voice that couldn't sing high but now I'm actually starting to be able to listen to my own voice.
Knowing that I have a good training program that works motivates me, as I'm certain that I'll become better if I just keep at it.

I'm recording with a Line 6 UX2 hooked to my PC. Vocals through a Rode NT1A.

I understand what you mean with a gaggy, heavy sound. I've been having trouble with that for a while and it's actually a lot better now. My voice was just underdeveloped when I started and I had bad, lazy speaking habits. I don't know if my native language (Dutch) has anything to to with it, but I've been working really hard to get a more quacky, edgy sound to my voice, but it's just that my natural voice was the exact opposite of twangy when I started. So it's taking a lot of work.
When I do the excercises in the FBR I mostly train in edging vowels like EH and AE, doing them as quacky as possible. But when I sing songs I still slip back into old habits I guess.
Are you saying that I should shade more into edging vowels when singing this song, or do I misunderstand?

Sure my friend, that is what I am here for. Get in front of me, I promise you it will be worth it. I do this 30 hours a week ad have developed so many things to listen for and techniques for singers, that I can hear you and diagnose whats going on very quickly and put you straight into techniques that will make immediate changes. Frankly, any of the great coaches on this forum can do that... it is what great coaches do, diagnose with their ears and then apply techniques to help the student work out of it... Apart from the fact that I can connect with your genre to a large extent as well, will be helpful.

Here is the link to the "New Student Package", it actually is the best deal I offer... you save $152, a good value for "Pillars" + 3 private lessons with me.

Awesome! You do what you do well. How's the throat? if you have no problems, keep it up. You have a sweet blend there, melodic, some rasp, some fry, and something even cooler. I can understand your every word,  A+ for that. You understand it is a skill.. 90% of people who do this style, just scream and sound like shit. You the heaven and hell sound, melodic on top, sweet over tones and a devil crawling out of a grave yard.

    Me likey Prog...

Cool song... and great, distorted vocals... I dig it!

Cool dynamics and "mojo'... you did a great job on this...

    2:18 - 2:20 - Sounds a bit flat... but no big deal.

If you were in a lesson with me, I would encourage you to maintain this basic distorted sound, but try to amplify more in the forward palette so you can amplify brighter harmonics... it would make it "cut" more on the track and give you more color... it would also be less fatiguing without sacrificing any of your mojo or vibe.

    Hi everyone,

I really appreciated all the feedback and comments! I will work hard on all the tips you suggested.

I will pass this along to my singing coach and we will look at them. Some of the points has already been raised by my coach, but singing correctly is very hard.... ;o)

Why have a classified as a hobby? Well, I have nothing... just my undeveloped voice, 1/2 hour weekly singing classes and lots of self-teaching, self training and desired to be my best!

Believe me, if I could, I would stop my day job right now and move on to singing for the rest of my days! Unfortunately, it might be too late for me to take it to a professional approach...the music industry is so saturated with so many good singers that it would be hard for me to get further. So, let's leave it as a hobby so I don't get frustrated... but, hey, this is just a strategy as I won't stop or give up...

The recital gave me so much strength and confidence and with the amazing comments you provided here (no sugar coating...which is good) I must go on!!! and I will!

I love the 80's and the powerhouse voices of that era. Steve Perry is the one that captivates me the most.

My goal is to record a single and put it on iTunes... who knows radio (big dream)... but that's my goal! I just need to write the song...lol!

Thank you so much for this amazing evaluation and validation!

Good job, I agree for a hobbyist decently executed, nice tone and instrument. I agree with everything above. That stated a few points I would add.

    1. It has rough spots and needs work, somewhat forced.. that does mean back down it always needs support, you need to refine the support, focus and control. Understand this clearly even if you perfect it, even if you get it better than Steve Perry, Steve Perry is one of those voices where most people will not give that full prop. Voice teacher might, people in general might, but the Steve Perry purist will not. The same with the die hard Mariah fans, I know people who sing her songs better than her, but Mariah fans won't admit it lol.

    2. Weight and registration , with the above stated you have 2 options to further develop that. If you are after a Steve Perry type sound there is an excellent video on the forum you can look up, he is really good at demonstrating the Lighter more agile registrations Steve Perry uses. Option 2 which I recommend is keep it your natural weight and tone, refine it and put your own spin on it.

    3. Lips are very important for color and feel, Steve Perry sing with a broader, widened up lip, it give the vowels a different tone and is part of his signature sound. You might consider keep your voice in the fuller registration and trying that to lift the color of the sound without changing the weight as much.

Is this the type of material you prefer to sing? or do you sing many styles ?

Over all great job for a non - professional , If you put a few hours a week into serious training you will do really well.
