Hi! I have seen that many people have sung this Maiden classic in this forum so i was thinking: Why not start a thread with just this metal classic. I have sung it myself many times and mostly butchered it. Here is my latest effort and critique good as bad is always welcome. Thanx in advance.

And a killer interpretation from you, Felipe. Very impressive. Your harmonies are so good, your falsetto is magical. If you want to be nitpicky, if you for example would like to make a record out of it, there are two minor things to improve. The word "me" after 1:21 is out of pitch and you wavered a bit in the word "die" around 3.47.

Your voice sounds fine here allthough the sound quality is not the best. You sang this thru a cell phone? And, yes, it is a great song.

Ron, you have alot of soul in your voice and your timbre fits this kind of songs really well. It was a joy to listen too, epecially the second version.

Hey, Xamedhi, nice covers. I don´t know if you are training like you are supposed to and if it is just a matter of time before you get the sound right. but what i can hear now is that the tone lacks some edge/twang, it is still a little bit too airy. Mabye more support and twang will get you there.

Adoney, i can understand why your friends wanted you to do a Symphony X cover, i mean, YOU ARE A RUSSEL ALLEN CLONE!!! I hope you take it as a compliment, i certainly would, who wouldn´t want to sound like Russel Allen. But are you as diverse as singer, Adoney, as Russel? It would be interesting to hear you sing a softer song like "When All Is Lost" - one of my favourite Symphony X-songs.

I agree with Geno here, it was very laid back and i would also have preferred more energy, a mor "gutsy" performance. But really there was nothing wrong with it, nice strain-free tone.

Vyper: Thanx for listening. I can sing the whole song like this, pulling alot of chest - but i must have a really good day with a good night´s sleep . Actually it would have been alot easier if the verses started on a Tenor C, B4´s are very hard for me, my voice wants to jump from A4 to C5. As usual some vowels are harder than others to have sounding good. You are right about the lyrics, i am sure many words are blurred and can be improved. I don´t know about others but i have often problems hearing the exact words from Tenor C and up even from the most skillful singers and i have heard/read that is due to the fact that only certain vowels work in the upper range and if that is right, then it is not strange at all if you can´t hear exactly what is sung.

Hehe, Spam brought this post up again, yes you are right, this was a bad effort and i haven't heard it since i posted it almost 3 years ago. I can hear that i have improved since then even though i am not practising as much as i should.

Yes, i wanted to do this song in my own style - i love metal songs with singing variation, calm parts varied with fierce ones, i am a big fan of progressive metal and one favourite band of mine - Opeth, often uses this kind of mix. The singer in that band sings in an even more extreme style than i do here.

I am not exactly sure what you mean by "the words that had to be carried seemed to be troubling you" - are you referring to the high pitched phrases "There walks a Lady we all know, who shines white light and wants to show"? Could you give an example of a phrase were i was way off pitch?

Sounds fantastic, very well done. My only critiscism like Rocknsoulover mentioned would be that i would have preferred a more belty ("belty" is that a word ?) end verse, it kind of drowns in the orchestra.
