David , the singing is great, which is what I expected... but I have to admit, Im more taken by the visuals on this one... which are also really cool. Video editing has become something Im working more with these days...

    Questions:

1). Where do you meet your "band"... collaborators... its clear this is a virtual project. Are you using some kind of special collaboration platform or service for this?  Would be curious to know.

2). What kind of video editing software are you using?

3). Also... duck into the recording forum and share with the community your technology chain... DAW, Interface, pre-amp, microphones, etc... that would be interesting for people I think...

That song has a really natural flow to the melody and a nice progression. You sang it really well too. I agree, ultimately we have to sing with our own voices. We might as well sing with our own personalities. Whoever it is we admire already exists or at least existed, in the case of people like myself who tend to admire older music.

Wanting to duplicate other people is less valuable than wanting to offer something unique to the table. Nice job on the remaster as well. Professional radio musicians have remasters of music all of the time (sometimes in excess), but I think it is even more important for those of us who weren't working with million dollar studio contracts to try to keep our content as timeless as possible.

Keep training Rob and I hope you find a good balance of working on your program and students with channeling the inner artist and singing. Sing in the shower, in the car, take time to sing just for you. That's really important too, no matter how much you train others.

I like this as much or more as the first time I heard it. And I think I appreciate it better now. First off, of course, the singing is totally on point and everything done means something and is not just a stunt.

Second, it really is a good song, by most any definition that I care about for what a song should mean and be. That's another and separate talent. There are a number of singers who get their songs from other songwriters and that is okay. Maybe I am a fuddy-duddy but I like singers that can write their own stuff.

And while, functionally, one would think a singer sounds best on his own stuff, it still requires the ability to sing. Otherwise, a person could wind up like a famous songwriter I could name who's songs became bigger hits as covers by others than his own versions ever did.

Granted, per the video, you had a pro mixing it on an analog board. But, by the time you are professionally recording something like you did, that is probably the way to go. Not that we all need to be mixed on a 24-track analog but it can't hurt, when you have that option.

And this song is the "sleeper." It is as good as other songs you have written and maybe a lot of people did not know about it like they did "Souls of Silence," which inspired a few fellow forum members to cover a song that you, Robert, wrote. How awesome is that? No one has asked to cover the few originals I have shared here.

So, hats off to you and bravo.

There seems to be a lot of "How to sing like..." videos these days. Is the pursuit of "how to sing like" someone else really the main goal you should be focused on in your singing?  Every voice is unique and every voice has the ability to demonstrate its unique areas of power, tone, range and embellishments. To be inspired by other singers is inevitable and to learn from other singers is a worthy endeavor, up to a point. But if you are going to become a legitimate vocal artist, you have to present YOUR voice to the audience, not trying to sing like someone else. As a voice coach, I am interested in helping you to learn about training techniques, to enable you to find your voice and grow as an singing artist.
Having made that point, here is a song I wrote years ago that has been played in many different ways through the years. A lot of people have enjoyed this song through the years. If it is new to you, I hope you enjoy it as well. It is one of those tunes that just comes together in about 5 minutes that song writers experience from time to time... Some songs just "flow" out... others have to be "built" and take more work.
The less "romantic" explanation is... this is the result of new audio mastering skills for video production. I remastered the audio on this and then rendered a new, "fresh" file... repurposing old, but good content... Enjoy!

Robert makes some good points. This is sung by a female and you are singing an octave lower than she is which brings the song too low for you. You are basically speaking this. Find a song that you can match the range and timber of the original singer. It will be easier for you to check your pitch against theirs.  I find it easier to access a singing voice when not in speaking range. It takes more energy and gets you out of speaking habits. After getting control of some basics then you will be able to start singing in speaking or below speaking range with more energy and control.

    Hi Osmosis...  Welcome!

Can you do us a favor and please upload a picture to your profile so that you have an identity and it helps us to make the site look more cool.

    ok, regarding your tune...

    - Are you doubling yourself with this or is this another person?  Im assuming you are doubling yourself.  The sound color of the two voices need to be more harmonious in terms of actual harmony ... or more accurate harmony... as well as texture.  The lower voice is more windy and "gruff", the higher voice is more compressed (less windy) and this is creating two sound colors that really blend intuitively together... so try to make them both windy or both with more compression on the vocal folds... just my producer opinion on that.

    - In my view, this is barely singing... its more like speaking. Reciting poetry which is an art form and could be cool... there is nothing wrong with that approach, but even when your performing a "recitative" approach... it still has pitch... you still have to execute this speech-like quality your using on pitch in relation to the key of the song... this is pitchy... and there is no margin for error or any "flex" when It comes to intonation... either your in our your out and if your out of pitch, technically.. its noise. Even if its close, its still, noise. So... this is noisy, because your not singing or reciting in pitch.

    - I can actually hear a melody in this that is trying to get out... the bed track is very cool and has some nice harmonic changes in the arrangement that lend themselves to some nice melodic movements, but these are melodic opportunities that are being missed due to ... your intonation not being accurate, your vocal tone not clean or resonant enough (its a bit froggy, throaty, .. not much amplified resonance in this sound.. which is how you get a lot of that great color when your actually singing)...

This needs work...  you can't really sing, unless you ... sing a lot... but on top of that, at this stage, you really need to train and workout your voice. You have a tired, lazy vocal system that is "sitting on the couch" enjoying a life of speaking... which is not a very favorable vocal mode for ANY of us... you need vocal workouts, scales, a teacher and an understanding about how to transform your voice into a wind instrument that has resonance, color, amplification... and great intonation, and interpretation.

You need to train... there are a lot of good coaches on this forum that can take you under your wing.. I happen to be one of them. I offer a comprehensive vocal training program titled, "The Four Pillars of Singing" that has enjoyed 100%, 5-Star Reviews from anyone that has ever bothered to give me a review.. click the link above to learn more and watch the video below...

I know I can help you... any coach on this service can... but the first step is you have to make a commitment in yourself and to a teacher and program. It doesn't just come through osmosis, it doesn't come by someone giving you a "secret tip", or watching teaser content on YouTube for free... and singing isn't something that you HAVE to born with either... just about 9 out of 10 people can learn to sing and most of that group, can learn to sing pretty darn good if you have a big heart, practice/train a lot and have a good coach and training materials.

There rarely is a free lunch in life and singing most certainly isn't the exception... hope this helps.

"Effortless" is right, especially in the "heroic" parts around F#4 and B4. I love it, I think its brilliant light mass belting.  It was super productive and fun to train with him for a week as well. Great edging vowels, great palette.

I have to say, I am also very proud of the production. The audio recording, camera work and edit was great. In a smaller sense, it is also a triumph in how to make relatively quick video productions that sound and look great. Audio recording + video in synch. Good strong start.

This is a pretty good cover. His high notes in this song are really well placed and sound pleasing and effortless! The lower notes in the song, however, are a little bit shaky. I have the opposite issue lol. Overall, nicely done!

Amazing DREAM THEATER Tribute! - Fabricio Fonseca from Brazil sings "The Spirit Carries On". Fabricio is a renown voice coach from Brazil that came to Seattle to train for the TVS Certified Instructor program and enjoy Seattle for the first time. Together we produced this great video. It is just the beginning Fabricio Fonseca! I look forward to our partnership and friendship. Thank you Dream Theater for a great song to train and cover.

You can sing. And here is what I would like to see happen. I am not an expert and my opinion can mean nothing but start out strong. In these two clips, You start out just about whispering and then pick up some steam about halfway through. Start out in full steam.

Also, get a little closer to the mic. I could hear kids in the background, which means  you are singing so low so that no one will hear you, not even kids.

Stop that. Sing out like you meant someone else to hear it.

I would like to say, one of the things I absolutely love about Robert’s Modern Vocalist World site is the amazing variety of artist from all around the world. This is truly become a site that is in a class all its own.

I know you weren’t necessarily looking for a review of the EP but if I were in a band, I would appreciate knowing what people thought about our music, so here goes.

Well Vat, were to begin.  First, I must say that you and your band are the real deal.  How fun it must be to work with such talented and accomplished musicians.  The production of your EP is outstanding and very professional.  I have listened to several bands out of India and by far, yours is the most impressive.

Refuge – Your use of time signatures is crazy, - love it.  Very complex but it comes together wonderfully. I love your note selection for the vocals and harmonies.  Everyone has great chops.

Canvas of Silence – Once again, very complex time signature.  Just the right amount of harmonies.  I really like your vocal runs; I can feel the Indian influence.  Your vocals remind me of one of my favorite singers “Brad Delp”of Boston fame, may he rest in peace. Your range is similar to his especially proven at the 10:27 mark of your EP video. Wow, that is nice.

Veil – This one really has a feel of India to it, I love the sound of the harmonics on the Sitar or Guitar, good stuff. It builds and builds.  A nice mixture of clean and grit in the vocals.

Time Turns Around – Guitar note selection once again very nice with a feel of India. The vocals are very beautiful and clean. Very progressive feel with the guitars.

Fragments – This and Canvas of Silence are my favorites on the EP.  Very complex beginning with a beautiful overlay of simplicity, nice combination.  The harmonies have a feel of the Eagles and Crosby Still and Nash. I love the way the  song has very complex signatures and very simple 4/4 times as well, then back to an up tempo beat, nicely done.

I know I didn’t comment on the bass and drums but there is no doubt they are amazing musicians as well.  Ron was right with the Neil Peart reference and my guess is someone was a fan of funk.

Thank you for sharing your music with us and keep writing material, I know this isn’t the last we will hear of Rainburn.

I liked what you did with the melody line on this, Robert. I had not thought of doing that. When I covered it, I was going for the original line, which I considered challenging enough. But sure, we had a QR tribute thread before but I think it would be neat to have one just for this song, arguably one of the most challenging for the stretch of range it calls for.

So, here's mine, crappy editing mix, and all. I will admit to a little cheat. The lowest note is not that strong in real life. I highlighted that part and boosted volume to make it more present in the mix.

Hey guys... I happen to stumble across this old recording this morning... thought I would share it for fun... this is me singing about 10 years ago... so don't rip on me too hard here... it was an earlier time and the production is marginal. It has some merits.
