I dig jazz and I like having a male involved in the song. Your friend's voice is cool in that he has some timbre shading abilities of lightness and darkness that remind me a bit of Frank.

I feel like your voice is very suited for a jazzy setting, but there is still a slight accent here that gives it character helps you stand out from other singers. I'd be interested in you singing Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan. To my ears your voice has depth and finesse that sounds really nice in more intricate settings.

It's almost like you have so much depth in your delivery (phrasing, timing, tonality shading) pop backdrops aren't fully revealing it.

I know Frank Sinatra is one of my favorite singers, and the Beatles are one of my favorite bands, but he always sounded strangled or restrained to me if he tried to sing a Beatles song. Their melodies were extremely defined, beautiful and sometimes innovative, but they were rigidly written. Frank didn't have as much room to strut his stuff compared to some of the Great American Song Book material that was written more intricately with more room for improvisation.

Of course you should sing any genre you want, but I hear that depth there. Nuance, shading, phrasing. A lot of people never reach that level.

Ooh, I missed this one. Good groove. Doot doot doot doot.

Love the harmonies. MDEW nailed it with the Mamas and Papas comparison. Somehow it sounds sunny and melancholy at the same time.

I'd just leave the vocals alone. I think it says what it needs to say as is.

I'm a fan of the original and I liked your version. You're gaining a lot more control in this lighter voice which is really important. I think you're lightly curbing on this. Welcome to my world.

You've had huge improvements man. There's nothing really to critique cause it sounds like it's placed pretty properly and you will only gain refinement if starting from a good place.

Just listened. I didn't know the song "Story", but I saw that you also recorded "Hero", so I listened to that one too. It's good that you have the "never say never" attitude. You have plenty of time to turn singing into a career. The mistake people make a lot, and I blame the media for this, is that you either make singing into a career immediately, or you don't make it at all. They'll have you believe, if you haven't been singing since you were a kid, you've got no chance. And they'll develop these made-up stories about people to fool you. You can work on developing a different career that will support you while you're getting your voice ready for a career. You've got a lot of time.

As for your voice, there are some things that need to be worked on. You are singing as if you're talking, but the two are different. You likely haven't learned how to use your diaphragm yet. You need to learn that, because, if you keep singing through your throat, you're going to ruin your voice. Work needs to be done on pitch as well. You can fix all of that and still have a career in singing though. If you really want this, you just need to practice everyday and it's going to come. It's just like working out. Like I said up there, you have a lot of time. There's no reason why you can't develop an amazing voice by your mid-20's. Want bigger arms? Do arm exercises. Want a stronger voice? Do voice exercises. If you want to know how to practice, post a thread in the "vocal technique" section saying that you're a beginner who is trying to find out where to start.

Sounding good. I always liked this song. It helped that this came out when I was in high school and there was this cute girl named Beth.
She hated the song.....That was my downfall....trying to sing it to her......Such is life.

I'm on the fence on that one. It sounds fun, maybe if it was specifically recommended to not force distortion and do another take if it's not something you can do healthily, but it does tend to be one of the vocal techniques that people would be most prone to forcing.

I would advise removing death metal Just because a beginner can make some serious dmg trying to sing those heavy growls and distortion.

And we can be like a surrogate family here for some. Not everyone needs to have the epiphany themselves at some random age. We can always spread the truth and support people here.

If your family or the people in your life don't get it, it's probably cause they don't understand singing like the people here do. The singers here 'get it.'

Here's the thing. When I was maybe 7 years old, I started really loving singing and doing it for the first time. I had a family member tell me my singing was awful beyond belief and I had to stop. It was said very seriously and I took it to heart. They were older, they seemed wiser. So being kid who was used to listening to authority figures, I did.

When I was 20, I was a musician who fell in love with the Beatles and realized I had to sing. So what happened, is I basically resumed singing with the skills of a 7 year old beginner. Minus half a decade medical hardships, I have probably at least 4 years of singing training so I sing like an 11 year old now, maybe going on 12.

Nobody would even think of not singing if it wasn't for other people. I just sing like I'm 11 years old with the wisdom of an adult who is wiser and doesn't take 'advice' about whether I should sing. By the time I'm 20 something years old in singing years, imagine that? Even the idea of stopping singing for any reason seems unwise unless you hate singing.

As for a critique of your voice. It's starting from a really unique position and I like some of the character of it already. It has a vulnerable quality that I can relate to, and a unique identifiable timbre. Pitch is better than expected from someone who is thinking about stopping. But the critique isn't that important compared to the mindset. Wherever you are in your development, sing like that.

Michael Jackson started singing at like 3 years old so by the time he was in the Jackson 5 he was already singing for longer than I am. He probably had influence from people in the church or family who sang who could guide him a little. By the time I have 9 years of experience, who knows? I don't care. I just sing. You should too. That's the natural state of mind of our species until other people plant doubts. Singing to me is 'sustained noise that feels meaningful.' Some people relate to the noise, others don't. I'm willing to bet cavemen made sustained noises that felt meaningful too. They might have even sung before they learned speak. Ooooooga booooga!!!!!

His family actually really embraced that kind of thing. They would harmonize while doing house chores. Everyone from the kids to the mother (not sure about Joe Jackson). You see what kind of thing that kind of support can give you? You could have one of the greatest voices in popular music!

I have found that those who really wish to sing and sound good are the ones afraid to let people hear them and they do not practice because they do not want others to hear them sounding bad, so they do not progress.....Those who do not care whether they sound good or not go ahead and sing and get better.......
Do not hinder your own progression by not singing and practicing. You get better by recording yourself......listen closely.......change things you do not like.....keep things you like......experiment.....If something hurts STOP DOING THAT.
You make week things stronger by using the week things.......
Vowels are your friends.....Consonants your barrier......
I am no teacher just someone else who likes to sing.......find a good teacher or program.... do the work.....progress......

No need to give up singing......Never....      Practice voice and train just like you would any instrument......
I hear you strumming a guitar..... Did you just pick up the guitar and know if it was in tune or not..... and if not did you already know how to tune it or play any chords......No..... you learned that...... and with practice you got better......Same with the voice........
If you can find a teacher or someone else who sings ask them for guidance ..... Train with a program.......
Nobody started out with a golden voice.....they trained..... and all of those you see and and hear on the internet, TV or radio are still training and practicing to sing in a healthy manner and keep their voice tuned and in shape.

That's very interesting. I wasn't referring quite so much to diction so much as there is some kind of timbre or, a resonance that I can imagine being really compelling in almost any circumstance, almost mercurial.

Like you could scoot off into the background and have a perfectly milky blended harmony. Step into the foreground and sing clean, raspy, high, low, falsetto sound great. I could imagine you singing sweet without sounding sappy as there is some kind of underlying substance, sing aggressive without sounding overly harsh as there is a softness or richness. Something there in the overtones.

I'm looking forward to seeing how your voice progresses. I think it would be hard to get rid of that richness and it could really help your versatility. Bono1982 told me awhile back this guy reminded him of my voice:

And you know Daryl Hall is a great singer and it's a compliment, but his timbre isn't top tier to my ears and tastes. There are a lot of singers I'd take above his for timbre preference, and you sound like you have a great foundation.

Your voice is badass, computers vacuuming or not. It sounds effortless as in the timbre is naturally appealing.

You probably have a great speaking voice too.

I prefer this over Sam Smith from what I've heard. Your accent adds something very unique and interesting to the track and your timbre expresses something unique outside of any genre I'm familiar with.

I don't have any useful critique aside from making the accent more typically western might make things more commercial in USA markets. For now, I'd prefer you sing how you sing as I find it more valuable artistically and as a listener I feel it more, but depending on your aspirations you should decide how to forge your own path in vocal development.

This is hilarious and I'm getting a huge kick out of it. Your voice is badass but it sounds on the verge of laughing with these random kids joining in. I love the depth of your timbre. Anyway, I can't even think of how to critique your voice cause I keep laughing. So while I'm in a good mood, I'll respond on other subjects:

Aaron Neville is most famous for this song, he has a great falsetto as do you:

My favorite song with a reference to children singing (although the choir may or may not include) is this version of Heaven Help Us All

The most amazingly bad song I've ever heard including children is not yours dude, The Clash actually released it for real on Sandinista covering their own song:

Ok.... Now that the children are out of my system. I'm going to try to listen and critique again....

Nope, hahaha, I started laughing again. You're an artist, you got an emotional response from me.

I have something a little different this time. I've been working on my improvisation a lot lately. I did this cover with somebody else and tried to fill in some of the silence and add to the song while they were singing. As some people may know, this is a pop song. I'm not really a pop guy, so I put my own spin on it.

I would like a third opinion on this. I can definitely be wrong and if I am it could explain some of my own problems but I do believe the first attempt of mrno1324 is the proper pitch only using a lighter phonation. The second attempt is an octave lower.
Any else want to chime in?  Please if I am mistaken explain why so myself and mrno1324 can understand the difference.
