  1. Readers of my posts know that Freddie Mercury is my favorite singer. I have always wanted to sing Queen songs(even if I don't do a great job of them :)) I have done a couple of takes of this very song with mixed, mostly average results. I am confident enough in my singing and my technique to post an update. Please comment specifically if possible on the belting/aggressive portions of the song. Also to me the chorus sounds a bit too sharp(piercing to listen to and not in a good way). Not sure if this is a singing technique issue or an error in mixing(or both). https://app.box.com/s/59r4g7q8tptndur6odplhf4layn69exc
  2. Lovely job. This is one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs and you did a great job. And is that accent Italian? There might be others who are critical, but to me it adds a layer of authenticity to the song.. I feel inspired to sing this myself now
  3. Interesting you should say that Denis. David Bowie has a really rich baritonal quality on his low notes. Me, I don't have the easy power and majesty of David or Geoff. One of the reasons why I chose to sing this song. It is a good barometer for validating any progress.. I would sing this half a step higher and it might be more comfortable for me. Thanks for your kind words.. It is going to take some time before I can add weight on my lower notes. They are not my strongest part of my voice and yes, I am a lot more comfortable singing the medium/high range for this song. It is just a fantastic song to sing. Thanks Killer. As always I really appreciate the time and effort you put into giving detailed feedback. Always gives me something to think about. About leaning into a beltier position, I think my technique is not too off, but I need to do a mental adjustment and work on the songs harder. A fully belty song is not that tough, but for e.g. like my last queen cover, it is only when the song changes rapidly between soft and beltier dynamics, I get into all kinds of problems. I think I have sufficient confidence now to try something more belty next time around.
  4. Hi Ron. The lower range used to be a big challenge. I just could not get any volume. This song is actually half a step too low for me still(especially when I sing "just begun" in the intro. But yes, this is a special song and my kids have made my world a better place for me
  5. Chris.. You are an amazingly versatile singer.. Do you do these recordings at home or in a pro studio.. They sound really really good..
  6. Hi Folks.. Please listen and give your critique... https://app.box.com/s/2b4e5oltpxgbd4cevjafqihmcqvxbd88
  7. Killer, I would love to do a skype session with you sometime.  If not, it will help us both exchange some notes, since we are both excited by the idea of doing this very song I think I have narrowed down my issue to an extent that I know what the problem is.  If I forget about really making a powerful sound and just sing like I do normally, the notes are absolutely in my range.  I have a problem only when I try to sing songs in this range around the passagio powerfully.  Maybe I am using too much twang perhaps longer than what is necessary.  Strangely for me, this causes issues in my ah(as in cat) sound and I think this is what spills into the specific words.  I think Rob addresses this in his videos, where he says that twang helps in getting the high notes and the listener cannot make out the difference since the nasality is only for a fraction of a second(or something to that effect).   To me, I think the solution lies in building the muscle memory to build the onset using twang, but releasing twang without losing the compression.  I think I have a much better version of this song in me in the months to come.. And I can carry over this lesson to other similar songs..
  8. Gneetapp, I din't think you said that! Yup, more practice and I think in a month or two I am ready for a repost
  9. Thanks.. It is too difficult for me to do a higher mass on the higher notes.. It is right up there in terms of how high and heavy I can sound Thank you   Bzean, thanks and it is certainly food for thought.  I love Freddie, but perhaps my voice is a great fit to sing his songs in the way he sings. Let me try something out next time around.  It will be more an interpretation if I were to do it my way(which is through light mass co-ordination).  I guess singer can convey energy without belting it out(e.g. Steve Perry singing "Dont stop believeing").. This song I was too happy to just be able to sing all notes..    Thanks Ron.  I am glad you noticed the articulation. I worked really hard to pronounce the words right.  I noticed that in some of my earlier songs, the words were jumbled and that too for the pace of this song it was an extremely difficult thing to do!   Gneetapp, thanks for your honest feedback.  This is a significantly tougher song than some of my recent work.  This is way tougher than songs with higher notes coz it keeps jumping up and down from Bb4, which is the absolute limit to which I can push my "Chesty" voice.. It is perhaps likely that the song is not a match for my voice, and I would be better served trying to sing it very differently using a light mass co-ordination, which I can definitely do, but not attempted here.. Me, I am thrilled with the outcome.  That is because I have tried so long to sing this song and sucked so hard at it!
  10. Nice.. There were a few off notes towards the end.  The rest sounded pretty good.  Your voice sounds very similar to Coverdale, especially the gritty parts.  Don't know if that imitation was your intention, but it sounded pretty good nevertheless.  I am always a bit jealous of folks with a deeper voice, I think it will give the male singer more options!     Good song choice for your voice..
  11. Before I give the link to my recording, I have to share how I feel about attempting this song..          Now for the link..    https://app.box.com/s/az6jzsweecrmhl4w6kkr19u7r24cnafd   Thanks for your comments, feedback, critiques
  12. Lovely as ever..  Such a beautiful song..  I think you have it in you to do a more intense and emotional version of this song.. But then again, you said wedding, so a more brooding version may not be appropriate!    Beautiful integration of falsetto.... Keep up the good work
  13.   Bono.. Thanks.. I will keep this in mind.. For me "ee" is a very tough sound, especially in the passagio.  I have a much stronger "ah" or "eh"
  14.   Killer.  thanks man.. I don't know what curbing means, but if it sounds alright, then I must be doing something right.  Even after purchasing the pillars, I still sing by instinct.  The pillars has been phenomenally helpful for me to understand what you guys talk about when you say "twang compression needs to be consistent" or "you need to move this portion towads curbing" or "laryx sounds too high" etc   To me when I sing it is 95% instinct.  Of course I have become more aware of what sounds good to audience and more aware about what a consistent tone is.  I have this forum to thank for helping me gain that knowledge.     The improvement that I have made recently is to add weight "on demand" to a light tone.  A way in which I can come down and add more chest.  I actually don't know how exactly I do it technically. But it gives me a lot of flexibility and I think I am ready to tackle a lot of tougher songs now.
  15. Giving up is for losers.  If you are really passionate, don't give up, but be ready to put in hard yards.  Nobody runs a marathon without physical preparation.  Singing is like that.  It takes time, effort and patience.  If you do things right, you will be surprised how far you can go..    If you want to improve, the best way is to purchase a copy of the Pillars and spend time on this forum.  There are amazing teachers here..
  16. Hi my friend. This means a lot to me. I know you have exacting standards and this gives me encouragement that I am on the right track
  17. I have a starting problem on all the songs!!!! LOL
