Aravind this is good! Nice interpretation. You definitely need more songs like this.

Also a good thing about this song is you can learn to use more of your natural voice without worrying about things like range. To me you can still sound more "natural" on this but I'm just talking about your tone here. I would like to hear a deeper warmer tone. I know you have it but you've been hiding it from us

I agree with Gneetapp and bono. You should do more stuff like this. I mean, go ahead and do the other stuff you want to do but this was good.

AWESOME! Really really liked it man! Nice timbre and emotion. This song always gets me if I start paying attention to the lyrics. You did such a good job dialing down so much the "cartoonish voice" that it almost disappeared completely. Although you can still hear it creeping in when you sang "time can bring you down, time can BEND your knees..." during the bridge, and in just a few places, but almost unnoticed, just a hint. Very good job, congrats.

    Hi Folks..

Trying out something slightly different this time.. This is one of my favorite songs.  If I listen intently, it always moves me to tears.

Thanks to anyone who gives a listen and drops in a sentence or two. Please spot if my delivery in the mid-low region is good..

Beast.. I will do that..I have long wanted to cover "Silent lucidity" by Queensryche and i will post it in a few days.. That is about as low as I can go.. I will also recording me speaking so that you can see if there is any difference..

I understand what you mean by "Home base" for the voice.  I have historically recorded an practiced with effects on and I am pretty sure it has affected the way I sing, practice and record.  Only very recently I started recroding with "direct monitor" and instantly I could feel a difference.  I am also buying an amp for my headphones, since the volume with direct monitoring is very low on 2i2 with my headphones(HD 280 pro).. I am not happy with how I hear my voice.  I am hoping it will help.. Also, it took me a long time to learn to bridge and connect properly and I did not frankly speaking focus on tone at all till.

Till very very recently, I had no idea how to sing low and middle range notes(maybe I still don't).  I used to get out of breath very soon while singing legatos.  Only after reading your feedback about spoken voice, I started to think about it and started singing a little differently.

I feel that the various parts of my voice are coming together and I will be able to see some improvements in the months to come..

Thanks Bono.. I wouldn't try this out in an audition!  My approach to singing is always to try to sing the song out of my reach or "just" out of my reach/skill set.. I have nothing to lose in this forum and I always hear interesting feedback that takes me to newer areas/styles that I would't normally know.

I agree with Gneetapp only from the perspective of how close you want to get to the original. You technically did the notes at the right pitch. In the original, "lay it on the line" is more of a cry than the kind of belty sound you did. But that is an aesthetic consideration and only valid if you are trying to sound like the original singer. I do like the cackle you get on the high notes. It gives a little rasp that makes that note jump out and bite the listener.

Hey Aravind, You were singing pretty much all the notes right, but it felt shouty to me, as if you were trying to push hard to reach the notes. I think you would benefit if you added the cry to your singing. As this song is light and more mellow, you don't need to approach it as a typical hard rock song, you can go a bit lighter just adding the cry, and it will also help you conserving energy. Still, awesome first attempt! Way better than when I first tried this. If you need help to understand how to produce the cry I talked about, you could check Tony O'Hora's videos (vocal power UK). When I first watched them they didn't help me at all because I didn't get how he did it, but then it made so much sense to me. I hope it helps. Keep on rocking man!

    Hello man!

Well one good point is that it is sounding relaxed. Is it comfortable?

The bad part is that it is indeed nasal as it goes . Also, when you began the second verse, "circus life", you let it fall from the position and was even a bit airy.

Try this, do the same you do currently, with slight changes. First try to just open more your mouth. Then, think of a SLIGHT yawn, you should still feel it the same, almost as if going through the nose, but when recorded the nasalance should be gone.

    Hope it helps!

Oh btw, dial back the backing vocals and try using panning to separate them

You could likely safely dial back some of the nasality without losing distinct identity. Owen Korzec gave really good advice. I've never sung with this much nasal placement, I used to over lift my soft palate maybe too high. A really quick fix for me at least is to go between an uh like 'duh' (tends to dip larynx slightly) and ah (like open up and say ahhhhhh at the doctor). Training it more specifically for singing could be a lot trickier.

I think the best thing you could do is experiment with the advice, and compare the results yourself. Your style of singing here is extremely nasal, but it's also from the heart. There are some styles of singing that are a lot more nasal than others. It's heavily influenced by cultural upbringing, so if you were born in traditional Chinese culture people might react differently:

For western pop radio you should maybe keep your eye on Serj Takian. Western audiences already find his sound 'weird' or strange or 'exotic', but there are audiences for him:

I'm not a huge fan of System of a Down, but I like his voice for its distinctive qualities. I like yours too, but especially in the heady area it's extremely nasal. It's a bit much for my tastes here too. Anyway, the way it works, is each culture will have a normative average of sound preference at any given time and highly nasal sounds are not what current culture is looking for generally. Generic culturally appealing sounds tend to be 'safe' and can be mass marketed over a wide audience, but can also be bland. Unique sounds divide audiences, but can also hook audiences in deeper to the artist. You'd have to figure out what you are as an artist and what is important to you.

Thank you for your kind words Rob.  I am happy to tell you that the Pillars is my first attempt at taking formal training for singing.  I have always sung based on my instincts and having spent a lot of time in these forums over the last year, I made the long pending leap to buy the pillars.  My experience has been very very good.  I am still familiarizing myself with the terms.  For e.g. I don't know what a "twang compression" means in your comment, but I guess since it sounds like it, I must be doing something correctly.  That was my motivation to buy the Pillars.. To learn the actual science that goes behind vocal production and I must honestly say that even with the limited time that I have been able to spend over the last week, it has been money put to very good use.  I have started the workouts(generally do them in the car during my drive to work), and I fully don't understand how it will actually help with specific spots while singing songs.  But it helps a great deal from a mental standpoint.. For e.g. when I go wrong in a particular place, I am obliged to think that it is likely an onset issue, so perhaps I could try a different onset.. You understand what I mean!   I am sure you have heard it many times before, but I will say it again.  Fabulous work on putting a training program like Pillars and kudos to you for getting this exceptional forum to connect singers across the world..

I just got a chance to listen to this. I thought it sounded good in several spots. It's got a lot of strong twang compression and your internation is ok. I think.Felipe has a good point, the vowels could stand to be more articulate as well as the consonants so it's more clear as to what you're saying, but in my view overall sounds pretty cool.

I hope you're work with pillars is helping you. If

@Ronald... Thanks for your patience for listening to my soundcloud songs and secondly for taking the time to give a detailed feedback. This is very valuable to me as no one has put their opinion about my singing in this fashion.
I have evolved a great deal in my singing over the last 1.5 years.  Some of the songs are from my earlier attempts and I am pretty sure I can do the same songs much better now(like Faithfully) and possibly employing a slightly altered technique..
I started early with a much chest heavy approach and over the last year and a half have morphed completely into a head voice/mixed voice style.  I am finding that I am capable of employing this style to reasonable effect in both Rock(like Iron Maiden) or Pop style(like Let it be), both are work that is relatively recent.  What I am definitively not is a chest puller/Belter(a la Bon Jovi), but this is something I have consciously stayed away from, because of fear of damage to my vocal chords.  My head/mix voice has become quite strong and I am actually using the same technique in both "Bring me your daughter" as well as "Let it be", which is a combination of Head voice + Support + Mixed voice belt. I am finding that I can use this to sing Michael Jackson(will cover "I just can't stop loving you" one day as well as Led Zeppelin(To me it sounds like I do a mean "Babe I am gonna leave you") and do them reasonably well.. The trouble for me is that this is very complicated way to sing.. It gives me a lot of flexibility, but I still haven't found a conclusive way to bring it all together.. The other big problem for me is doing lower-middle range(third octave notes) in my chest voice.. This is the weakest part of my skill set and I haven't found a way to connect when I sing like this..

It will take me another 6 months to a year to put it all together, till then I can only practise.  About what I like to sing? I love songs across genres, and sing songs that I love to hear and ones that challenge me..

Once again thank you for your detailed feedback..

Hi, I started with your song list at soundcloud, and it says a lot. I’m not expert with vocal but I can try to describe what I heard. I think you have two types of vocal which has big difference between, ► Rock/Metal and ► ‘Pop’ type.

Your singing on ‘♫Bring Me Your Daughter’ is (as we know) typical Rock/Metal vocal type; very powerful and uses high notes (I don’t know if it’s head or chest voice or..). And you pull that Rock type and show your ‘Pop’ side of vocal with song ‘♫Let It Be’. I wouldn't know that two songs sung by same person if not listen to it on your soundcloud.

If you used vocal type number 1 often, you could have some kind of ‘breathe dilemma’ when singing slower song; I can feel this on the song from Bryan Adams: “When a part raise to higher note, should I use that ‘Metal high note’ like I used to or how should I prevent that happen because this isn't a Metal song”. . Something like that J

It happened to my Band vocalist (long time ago), we play hard rock, metal, rock and roll, I played guitar. When we try something else other than Rock, the vocalist complained about his breathing, ‘my heart used to pump fast’ said he.

Another interesting song is when you sing ‘♫Faithfully’; no ‘typical Slow Rock’ on the song and no Metal highs either; I think you can use that side of yours (like in ‘♫Let It Be’) outside the classic rock world like Pop or R&B. I can’t mention one; you should sing what you like.

Again, I’m not expert in vocal (I can’t even sing), it’s just a general opinion from what I heard.

    Best wishes.

    Hi Folks..
Wish the readers and the forum moderators a merry christmas..

I did a version of this song a few months ago.. I had a lot of technical issues then and I have corrected some of them, primarily singing with proper breath support and using appropriate vowel modifications.  What I am finding with improvements is that the ear becomes trained to spot all minute pitch errors.. . So to make that 1 to 2% improvement becomes more and more difficult... I now understand why professional singers take a long time to record songs in studio   and more importantly why they dedicate their lives to self improvement..
