Some found me covering a quintet of lead singers a bit much, so rather than compete with 5 lead singers, I grabbed some Four Tops:

Levi Stubbs and the Four Tops are still a lot to compete with, but I put a lot of passion into it and have been trying to work on letting my emotions steer my voice now that I can do this again.

    Hello folks,

This is a cellphone video someone shot of me covering this Judas Priest song at one of my band's shows. As always, looking forward to your opinions, both positive and otherwise  Cheers!

Wow, it looks effortless. Not saying it is, but it's so well done that it looks that way. He was pretty much spot on throughout and fully live. Thanks for posting, Rob.

Marketing ... see if you can get a link placed at Harley Davidson's website. That kind of raspy blues sells well. A number of "motorcycle enthusiasts" I have known like the bluesy sound.

Basically, take a lesson from Avenged Sevenfold. Their singer, M Shadows, is a big-time gamer. So, he got to writing an i-phone game app that is being developed into a full blown game platform with their music included in the game. Which can also lead to more cd sales. The game he designed is called "Hail to the King Deathbat." Look on youtube for M Shadows Renman 98 to see the interview that talks about this.

There are not a lot of brick-and-mortar music stores left and it takes about 60,000 units sold to rate having some space at Walmart.

Which doesn't mean you can't sell well. You just have to be imaginative. Lordes made a video to share on youtube with the song "Royals." Next thing you know, they are peforming on music awards shows.

You can also sell your music to others. Copyright your originals, get listed with ASCAP, send your song demos (and the link you shared here is a good enough quality for a song demo) to music directors at tv networks. If you can get a recording artist to hear it, they might record it while you sit back and collect royalty checks. Maybe enough to rent a tuxedo.

I don't understand the majority of it. I do really like your tone and your pitching and phrasing.  I love the bluesy, soulful use of your voice, and the raw energy of this performance really complements the stomp of the song.

Thank you so much for not using auto tune, it helps me connect with this kind of music much more than I normally could. I listened to it multiple times.

You're better at singing than I am on a technical level and combined with a language barrier it makes critique virtually impossible, so I have none. Good luck and you're welcome to post more. I love hearing diversity here.

I am also one who may give out a good job to a somewhat less than stellar performance. I also try to take into account  what problems the poster has had in the past and where he/she is now. Sometimes an awesome tone or delivery will make up for a few bum notes. These are usually for the ones who do not have a polished sound and backing track.
And, I would be more critical of one who does have a polished sound and backing track. Why? because the stakes are higher. They are entering the professional stage.
I cannot say that I am qualified to give advice or critique a sound, performance or song style because I would give a bad review for most of the things I hear on the radio today.....From all genres.  Then again that does not mean that my opinion is not valid because a lot of people that I know feel the same way.
To answer the question of why do people post here? For myself I know I have problems. If knew how to spot them myself or how to correct them I wouldn't feel the need to be here. But there are others who feel the need to validate their progress. Which also leads back to why I would give a good job to a less than stellar performance......Validating progress. Going from having 50 bum notes to 10 bum notes is progress which in some cases truly deserves a good job.

That's interesting. For me support is more like maintaining an expansion and keeping some engagement? Have you tried the exercise I've mentioned a few times elsewhere of the inhale through a real straw or invisible straw (small mouth opening) and exhaling an 'sssss' hissing sound (kind of like a snake) until you run out of breath yet. Repeating this exercise a few times, while feeling the area below your chest and above your belly. If you don't raise you shoulders, and feel engagement down there in your diaphragm, for me I get a bit of expansion, and it feels a bit anchored, but doesn't feel squeezed.

People have varying ideas of support (some people even talk about like 'toilet squeezing') , but for most scenarios you don't need to squeeze or have huge tension. So if it feels like you have to squeeze too much you may want to keep dialing in with support.

As for the second thing, never close those doors. You never know what might come up on your signing journeys. I'd rather hear you on the radio too.

Sounds really good.  I like the energy you put into your singing.  Lots of style and rhythmic phrasing.  And a range of dynamics - distortions.  Good stuff!

    Hi everyone,

Here's another try of singing, after taking a few lessons at music school. Trying to feel my chest voice here, so my diction is far from perfect because of that
The good thing is that I sang it without any tension in my throat. And I think I kind of moved that tension into my abs (diaphragm?) and concentrated on that. Is that actually the right feeling to catch?
And I wonder if I sound better or is it just an easier song..

    Thank you.

That was good. Scenes From a Memory is my most listened to Dream Theater album with maybe only Awake competing with it so I'm very familiar with this song and he did it well.

You wouldn't even have to change the way you sang this, just a change in perspective would be enough. The voices sound different enough from each other that they sound imitated(not the best word and not bad imitations either).
Just like you mapped out in the above post, the different sections are different aspects of your personality. Instead of taking on the voice of the other singer let that aspect of your personality take over. It just seems to me that it would make the song more fluid and it would work with one singer singing the whole song. Like I said earlier it is a mental change not a physical change(the mental change will manifest in the physical sound).
None of this takes away from your original performace. It was pretty freakin' good.

Hello Killer, I would like to do a deep feedback on your song as you deserve since you always do that with mine and the rest of the fellows. So, I promise I´ll do. In the meantime, let me tell you two things:   1) I glad you recorded your voice with a bed track 2) I would like to listen to you singing other kind of song with less changes, a more stable song

I like this. Can I make a suggestion?(I'm going to anyway ) I know this song is performed by the whole band, each singing their part, My suggestion is for you to sing it not trying to sound like different people singing those different parts. It seems to me the the song would work that way. Different aspects of the same personality. Keep all the highs and lows just do not try to change timbre to sound like a different person.

This is good. I'm not familiar with the original song, but I've come to like your style of aggressive vocals. There is a warmth to them lacking in a lot of metal genres.

At first it was too much and you felt distant, but I feel like you're getting a better balance now.

The singing overall is really well done. But as someone that favors soul over metal, some of that lower mid warmth in your voice really grabs my ears.

Thanks everyone, I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out. I'm going to re-record it tomorrow and show you the finished piece .  KillerKu thanks, I tried my best to not make it appear tacky and cheesy. I've been listening to You Am I recently, they were masters at this style of writing,

That's a really good sound man. I think I'll come back with a better critique as I got to go somewhere, but it sounds beautiful and accessible. Not muzak 'beautiful,' not generic beautiful, it is still filled with emotional depth.

Don't stop making ones like the last one, even if it is less accessible. It's all real expression, but just know this is a beautiful sound. It explores less painful, but also meaningful places.

Ok... Real quick before I go, I showed my friend again. And she says she is very impressed with this song. So it's a hit.

I'm listening man. I like it so far. You have a darker, slightly woofier tone than a lot of singers in this genre. which I like, but I imagine being more difficult to perform than a brighter twangier sound. Most records might mix it a little punchier, but I like the change of pace. You may consider brightening the area around singer's formant (2-3 kh) if you wanted to meet genre expectations on future projects as it sounds a bit distant which is relaxing vs tiring on the divide. I like raw vocals quite a bit, but it might be just a bit on the under-produced side, not that I could produce it better.

I also wanted to compliment the additional use of the harmonic spectrum with a clearer focus than a lot of modern progressive music. The use of arpeggios and cleaner tones allowed a broader width of harmony with clarity. I know from listening to more modern Dream Theater (Black Cloud Silver Lining was perfect example), there is like this 'syrupy sounding keyboard' throughout making this vague thick harmony, but it's kind of undefined and not very rockish. You're exploring more progressive harmonies without losing a clarity to the listener.

Your whole band are quite skilled, the bass player is quite the slapper. Guitarist has a range of styles. I appreciate not everything all of his playing being a root and fifth when he cranked up. Drummer is more skilled than I am for sure, very polished and keeps great time in numerous time signatures.

As a listener, my tastes veer more towards the Bowie side of artish rock, which focuses more on timbre alteration, and eccentricity, than choppier time signature alterations, like Rush, but I can appreciate prog as well. You guys do prog very well. Rainburn is a cool catchy name too.

Congratulations on getting your stuff out there and trying to get 'somewhere.' I'm wishing you well and thanks for posting.

My theme song, one of my favorites.    "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC (2015)   https://app.box.com/s/2v1ksz4832lud0zb6c6ru2g2ipu7d09y   Guitar and guitar solo, ronws, Hondo Flying V through Roland GS-6 rack-mount digital effects unit.   drums - rock drum patch on Casio LK-165   Bass - fingered bass tone on Casio LK-165, but played live in the track by ronws.   Of course, my voice, on the Fame CM-1 Studio Condenser mic given to me by fellow member Thanos, (akward?). Sorry, I just can only remember the spelling of his real name. Instead of using the pop filter, I literally put a sock on it (clean, of course.)   Everything jacked into the m-audio m-track interface and recorded in Audacity. About as "low-tech" and redneck as one can get.   And lastly, mix by me, as if you couldn't tell.
