Musikman7002 got a reaction from Adolph Namlik in How do I make my voice sound better?
I agree with all the great advice everyone has given. I have always preferred a lower female voice to a soprano. I think Ellise on this forum is a fantastic singer and I think you should listen to clips of her for solid examples of a fantastic female voice that has a very mature darker quality to it but with great compression and extended range. I love the vocals of the late great Jimmy Scott and he was know for having an androgynous haunting quality to his voice. I truly think you sound like a woman with a lower voice and that's nothing to be ashamed of. Practicing something you love to do is worth it. I gave up being embarrassed to rehearse years ago but I totally understand the fear as I was a very shy singer for many years. I hid behind my guitar playing in bands etc and yet now very few people even know that I play guitar as most people just know me as a singer so you can for sure do the same. Robert is a great teacher and has so much useful info for you if you have the drive and desire to go for it.

Musikman7002 got a reaction from Robert Lunte in Take Hold Of The Flame 2008
This has always been the holy grail to me vocally. This version is a bit old and I would like to have remixed it but could only find the background track and this 2 track master. I was just getting a grip on this tune here and I can hear myself getting fatigued towards the end of the song. I am going to do an updated version soon since I found the background track. This is for you Jabroni

Hi!
Man two things that needs to be addressed right away, first, the begining is awesome in regards to position and placement, thats exactly what you need to do, BUT, please redo it and sing on the beat man, you are singing ahead of the tempo almost all the time, its distracting!
And when going high, you are exagerating the change, try to keep your voice closer to what you do on the begining, just use the vowels more on the direction of Uh (cover more). The way you are doing right now produces a huge change and it breaks the quality you have on the lower area. On Hold, either go loud with OH, or cover too. You sang it almost hEHld, doesnt work well.
Right direction, keep it up!

Musikman7002 reacted to Javastorm in Victim of A Foolish Heart (Acoustic)
Thanks for listening Ron! It's weird covering a cover of a song and seeing just how distant from the original material it can get in a musical sense, while retaining the meaning...or sometimes taking on something new entirely.

Musikman7002 got a reaction from Javastorm in New York Minute - Don Henley
Wow, thanks for the nice review Javastorm. I really love the vibe of this song and sometimes I wish I had one of those "character filled voices" lol. I just don't have that type and have never smoked either haha. It's not my comfort zone but I am glad its not showing I love so many types of singers and I started out with the super range type singers and sometimes for me to sing something simply and emotion filled is the harder thing to do. That's why I really do think its important to try and absorb as much as you can from other singers. I find if I practice a singer that I admire quite a bit it almost becomes part of my vocal DNA and when I sing other songs or originals I will hear little bits of my influences blending together in interesting ways. Again, thank you for the review I do appreciate them.

Musikman7002 got a reaction from Javastorm in New York Minute - Don Henley
I have always loved this song by Don Henley. He has a real "world weariness" quality to his voice and sometimes almost kind of "Talk sings" some of the words along with a bit of lazy diction done in a cool way. I by NO means have that quality to my voice but I tried to get into the Music Noir jazzy vibe of this song and did my best. My voice is a bit lower than his so the kind of speak singing moments are a bit hard as its just a bit higher than my regular talking.

Musikman7002 got a reaction from Adolph Namlik in Out of the Blue- Elton John
Thanks for taking the time for a review MDEW. I think the tightness is probably just a more natural sound for me to produce although with curbing some vowels I can round it out a bit more but it is sorta like a fingerprint lol. I love Elton John and want to try some of his other songs soon. I will experiment with broadening my sound some more and see what I can come up with. Most of my singing on tunes that I am familiar with are just from memory and I don't do any A/B comparisons while I am working on the tracks. Maybe if I would compare earlier in the process I would get closer to the artist although maybe there is something said for giving it my own spin haha. BTW I have enjoyed your comments on many threads around here. You are very knowledgeable and very willing to share that info.

Musikman7002 got a reaction from Xamedhi in Trying different types of cover material
I appreciate the comments Xamedhi. When I was younger I only sang heavy rock and later on I started trying songs outside of my comfort zone and I discovered a bunch of rough areas in my voice. And also after working on these type of songs I noticed my originals where starting to have a bit more of a unique style to the vocals instead of the more carbon copy versions of other singers I had been attempting. It's almost like all the different styles overlapped and created something a bit different for me to use.

Musikman7002 got a reaction from Xamedhi in Lights - Journey
Great observations! I will give that a shot in the future. When I tracked it I only had time for 2 takes and that was the better one lol. I really try to work on my pitch because nothing ruins a vocal like wayward pitch haha. There are singers that just are naturally really good at staying on pitch I have to work at it quite a bit and those couple lines slipped through the cracks I look forward to more of your singing Xamedhi, I have liked what you have put up on hear already.

Musikman7002 got a reaction from Xamedhi in Trying different types of cover material
Hi, this review forum has been a little quiet so I thought I would load up a few old tunes and some newer material I am working on. I feel its kind of important to try different vocal characters and sounds outside of your comfort zone from time to time. What I am doing is I am going to load up a few different songs where I am working on different aspects of my voice. Sometimes when I try different styles and vocal textures etc. I discover different parts of my voice. Sometimes I try to really push the higher range or power etc. and sometimes I am working on a more relaxed high range material and then I go the opposite way and try to really work the very bottom of the range. What I discover is that the best part of my range is in the lower richer ends of my range but I still try to always work the higher stuff in as well.
