  1. I was thinking to split the difference, But how many times can you listen to the same song from different people and not go nuts? Give them a chance to process the info and make an informed decision.
  2.    Now that this challenge is over, will there be a recap of who is considered the "Winner" and what qualities or aspects of the performance that tipped the scales?   Out of curiosity, where did you find the "Judges"?  Or shall we create a poll to determine the said winners?
  3.    True story...Back when I was in a band(early80's) This guy was giving me a hard time(arguing over nothing) being obnoxious flailing his arms around and stuff. He knocked the Mnt Dew out of my hand. The look I gave must have really scared him because he immediately apologized and bought me another dew and was quiet for the rest of the evening. I am 5'7 under 130lb people usually laugh when I give them the "Mean" look.
  4.     My first consideration in covering a song is finding the connection in my own life. Unfortunately I was never into fast cars and do not get the thrill off driving fast or feeling superior because I can drive 120 miles an hour on a highway that has a limit of 55. I can however find a connection to Sammy Hagar's " I can't drive 55" but that is because I am afraid my car will fall apart if I go any faster than 50.(If you ride in the thing you will understand)     Although if Someone tries to take my "Dew" well that is a different story...."I LOVE IT", "I NEED IT", "I BLEED IT".......Looks like I am in. I just found my connection.
  5. I think it is a great idea to have people cross genres(not genders like I almost typed, although that is another  way to break the bonds of type casting but that is for another forum).   It could help break ourselves from other habits that we do not realise we have. Someone who is used to having a strong grip on their vocal folds could benifit from singing a Frank Sinatra song, Soft spoken and mellow as opposed to crying high notes of RnB or Rock.....Someone like myself who is more comfortable with Folk songs could get some benefit from the suggested song of Highway Star because you need to get loud and distorted to get that sound. Even if I crap out, it does not matter. I will find another way of expression to convey that emotion or energy that is required by the song. Anything new is another choice for expression.
  6.    Highwaystar?   Jeez!    Couldn't you find anything with a little higher notes and more screaming? This is cake!
  7.    I think the whole point is sing outside your style or Sing it in your style. Just a friendly thing to see what happens and how songs would sound in a different genre.
  8.     How do you keep the music playing? answer: Keep singing like that.
  9.    Your voice sounds really nice.  Just those few places that Bzean123 pointed out. I may not have even noticed If I had not read his post first.
  10.     Hard Rock sounds good to me.   It would be cool to get some tips along the way for those out of their element. Even if you choose to reinterpret the song give a rundown on why chose a particular effect.
  11.     Sounding good. I always liked this song. It helped that this came out when I was in high school and there was this cute girl named Beth.    She hated the song.....That was my downfall....trying to sing it to her......Such is life.
  12.      The first step is to realize that you can improve.  The use of vowels are important. You learn to control how much effort you are putting into the sound. Control how soft or loud you are singing. Pay attention to how your voice changes during different kinds of emotional responces, you use those elements to control your sound. When you are sad your voice is soft and quiet, Happy a little stronger on the voice, Mad strong and forcefull. There are certain Physical things beyond your control that happen when you are crying and laughing, learn how to do them on purpose. When crying your vocal folds will thin out and you speak with a higher pitch, this is one of the elements when singing higher. A similer thing happens when laughing but kind of in the opposite direction. If you have heard about using support in singing, this happens naturally when you are laughing, also when laghing your throat opens up and your soft palate lifts. Have you tried to speak in the middle of a belly laugh? You speak a whole lot higher and the tone is solid.    Anyway pay attention to how your voice works and experiment with making different sounds. Get a coach if you can, Robert has a great program and believe me, if you really want to know how the voice works, you will find more information in his package "The Four Pillars of Singing" than anywhere else.   No one is guanteed to get a recording contract or be famous no matter how good. Do not let that be your goal. That leads to frustration. Sing because you love to sing. Improve because you want to improve not because of some dream of being famous.
  13.    My Parents, uncles, Aunts...would get together on Saturday nights, play and sing Bluegrass Gospel when I was young.  I cannot handle too much of it now..... My uncle Jimmy would sing the high tenor.....He would sing notes that no one else could reach....Full voice clear and true. It would not translate to rock but it was awesome to hear. Ask him how he does it and he just says I don't know I just sing.    I knew about those notes being flat. I was sliding up to the top note for effect but stopped the notes too early. I left the track alone because the parts that I was really worried about sounded good to me.  I would go flat on almost every "All" in the song. I tried to round them out a little more my singing " Awl" with a little Oh added in there. I have no other way to explain the vowel I was singing. But it sounded better than what I was doing before.    I think you are correct though, I was also trying to sing those lines in the pre chorus a little too open and that is why the sound cut out before reaching the note.    Thanks for the tip.
  14.     Michael Jackson is a very good example......Even after all the success he had, he  still had a coach, a teacher. He may be the only big star that we can watch training  thanks to the internet and youtube. You may not find videos of other big singers training maybe because of pride maybe just because they did not want to be recorded sounding bad but believe me they still train and make all those weird noises that you will see and hear people do when you look for videos of vocal techniques and training.
  15.     Here I go again.......You had to get strength in your legs.......then you had to learn to crawl......then your legs got more strength and had to learn to stand.....and you fell down....a lot till your legs got stronger.........then you took a   few steps at first.....and fell down.....a lot..........and your legs got stronger........shall I go on?        I had to be reminded of all this stuff too.......and not too long ago........Ronws had to tell me to STOP THAT a few times....Thanks Ronws.
  16.     I have found that those who really wish to sing and sound good are the ones afraid to let people hear them and they do not practice because they do not want others to hear them sounding bad, so they do not progress.....Those who do not care whether they sound good or not go ahead and sing and get better.......    Do not hinder your own progression by not singing and practicing. You get better by recording yourself......listen closely.......change things you do not like.....keep things you like......experiment.....If something hurts STOP DOING THAT.    You make week things stronger by using the week things.......    Vowels are your friends.....Consonants your barrier......    I am no teacher just someone else who likes to sing.......find a good teacher or program.... do the work.....progress......
  17.     No need to give up singing......Never....      Practice voice and train just like you would any instrument......   I hear you strumming a guitar..... Did you just pick up the guitar and know if it was in tune or not..... and if not did you already know how to tune it or play any chords......No..... you learned that...... and with practice you got better......Same with the voice........    If you can find a teacher or someone else who sings ask them for guidance ..... Train with a program.......    Nobody started out with a golden voice.....they trained..... and all of those you see and and hear on the internet, TV or radio are still training and practicing to sing in a healthy manner and keep their voice tuned and in shape.
  18.   I just looked up Grayson co,Texas. There is a community called Collinsville. I also lived in Collinsville for a while in Pennsylvania.
  19.     I was going to mention genres from other countries in my post on Bluegrass..... This is a world forum and that is what makes it great.
  20.    You left out BlueGrass too...      Seriously talk about high tenor notes...     Just kidding........Too many Genres to choose from......    Good idea though....sounds like fun...
  21.    My Fathers family have been in Grayson Co, Virginia from 1780s to1930s, A few times in my life close cousins have move back and forth from there.    I have close cousins on my mothers side in Ash Co. North Carolina. I spent summers there from ages 7 - 20 It has been a while since I visited.
  22.    Sounds like a good idea. It has been fun hearing all these different people sing the same song. It would be interesting to see how others would approach songs from outside of their preferred genre.
