  1. Thanks Pekka. I fool around like this a lot.....Changing words just to take the edge off of trying to sound good and getting my butt kicked.
  2. Thanks Bzean.........I am trying to get away from the southern/country accent/sound for awhile to help with my tone and pitch. My "Ah"s drift towards "AA" and sends any tone into my nose also helps to raise my larynx and cause problems in the passaggio. I could try it as Waylon Jennings as opposed to Willy Nelson but my usual tone drifts more towards Willy. My voice is not Deep enough for the Traditional Baritone country sound either. I am not finished with this and may try a full blown country style just for the heck of it along with Louis Armstrong of course. People around here seem to like grit and rasp......
  3. Sounds great Magika, You should post this in the official Challenge section. You will find it directly under the review section on the Home page. I just posted mine in the review section to further advertise the Monthly Challenge for others who do not know about it. I still didn't get any reviews on my singing so I guess the song does not fit my style. "C'est la vie".
  4. I guess I dropped the ball on this one. Maybe I should add some grit and sing it like Louis Armstrong. That would be interesting.
  5. The Idea of the challenge is no so much to sing in a particular style.....It is more along the lines of taking a singer out of his comfort zone and trying something new. Maybe .....What if this song were arranged for another Genre rather that the one it is currently identified with. I am not much of a Jazz singer....so here it is more on the Folk side. https://soundcloud.com/mdew-4/autumn-leaves-practice
  6. I was getting kind of bored while working on another song so I started messing around......This is just for fun....
  7. I thought I would give Autumn Leaves a shot. I tried Jazz for a while and that was just not happening. My internal rhythm is out of phase with Jazz. So here it is If Bob Dylan or maybe Arlo Guthrie had written it......... Just call me Nat King Coalminer. https://soundcloud.com/mdew-4/autumn-leaves-practice
  8. You and your friend are just playing around and you want a serious review? For playing around....not to bad.... it shows that you have the range.....the sound will get better in time. I could not hear well enough to know if you were on pitch. I could tell you were close enough for playing around with it. You and the song have potential.....
  9. I have been playing it on my guitar in Am.....The chord voicing is easier.....I may have to tune down a whole step. The song itself seems softer and more personal in Gm. Thanks for letting me know.
  10. I think you have just invented a new Genre.....Country Metal.....UK Metal Grass?....... I have been working on Hillbilly Jazz for the other challenge.....
  11. Did you arrange the music and play the instruments also? What key were you in? Nice work.......
  12. Thanks Bzean, I was able to find a fairly straight forward recording of this. Those Jazz guys just like to make things complicated by listing all of the passing chords and changing the target chords to their extensions and replacing the target chords to fit a different key signature......10 different Jazz recordings 10 different progressions and rhythm beats with the same melody line. Sounds good though...
  13. I have been working on "Autumn Leaves". I am more of a "Folk" musician and have been trying to figure out those Jazz chords.......To make the song better suited for my style I had to break it down to the basic melody and chord progression and rework it from there......I think I have come up with something that will fit my style of singing and Guitar playing. I hope to be recording later this evening. With the bar raised as high as it is now for a Jazz rendition I thought it best to sing in my own style and avoid any Vocal and style comparisons.
  14. Great Job G, by taking the bull by the horns and getting us ready. When Jazz was mentioned Nat King Cole was the one of the first to pop in my head. Just too many songs to choose from so I missed the deadline. Thanks to this thread I also ended up with one of those ear worms......"Mack the knife" will not stop playing in my head (Bobby Darren)......It just doesn't seem like the correct song for a Jazz challenge so I did not suggest it.
  15. I have been trying to come up with the quintessential country song; It almost has to be Hank Williams Senior. A toss up between "Cold, cold Heart" and "I can't help it if I'm still in love with you".
  16. Sounds great BlackieJane, I'm not sure why you haven't gotten anymore comments yet. Sometimes otherwise great songs and performances get overlooked just because people may be unfamilier with the song. Welcome to the Forum and I hope you post some more songs. (Love these new emoticons)
  17. Don't worry about it, Dew. It's great to have as many people as possible get involved with this, but everyone knows that life can get busy at the drop of a hat, and suddenly the time isn't there. I managed to get an attempt off and tried to get a second version done, but the time wasn't there. I didn't manage to record anything with a backing track this time. I want that to be different this month, so I'm going to see if I can make that happen. Speaking of this month, it would be great if you could be a part of it. We're running two challenges this month: Jazz and Country. And it would still be nice to have you post a Highway Star cover in here. How about "Highway Star" as sung by Willie Nelson? No one has done that, yet. Little bit of that Willie walking bass run on an acoustic guitar ..... I was thinking more on the lines of George Thorogood distortion on the lower octave and change the words a little. Nobody gonna take my Dew.....Gonna drink it till I die. Nobody gonna get my Dew....Let me tell you why Ooooh Its slimey and Green, All Caffene........ I love it! I need it! I feed it! It's a wild ride ... All Right....Hold Tight...... I've got some in my Car...........
  18. Good Job Felipe. Gsoul and the rest, I am sorry that I could not get any loud time for this and still intend to record my attempt......If nothing else it would have been interesting......
  19. I am no teacher, Just another singer......Some of the components for support is to breath deep into your belly(figure of speech) The idea is to expand the lower ribs. When someone surprises you and you take a quick breath because of being startled, that is the type of breath. Another part is to keep the lower ribs expanded. Along with those is to have the kind of energy of scolding a child and not wanting to be loud enough to scare the child.....So you are being forceful but holding the air back at the same time. Placement is kind of like where you sing from. Sounding like the singer is not a bad thing. Either sounding like the singer or trying not to sound like the singer can both be bad. When you sing with good placement and you SING LIKE the original singer you may not SOUND LIKE the original singer. Trying to SOUND like the original singer may move you OUT of good placement. Confused yet?
  20. Hi Mark, Welcome to the forum. Sounds pretty good . There is lots of potential there. No real problems with pitch. The only thing I noticed would have to do with support. Getting the sound to be a little more solid. The only reason that I am bringing this up is because you sound pretty good now but with a little effort you could sound awesome. Sometimes there is only a fine line between the two. For Kentucky Rain GO AHEAD and try to Match Elvis's sound a little....The reason I say that is that you have a similar voice to his anyway and that lower larynx/dampened larynx sound that gives Elvis power helps to bring about the support. Just don't over do the mimicking, that can start to sound pretentious.
  21. Elvis, your tone was good man, actually I rather liked it. Don't be using the defeatist approach. "I lack vocal range and my low notes end up wobbly". Whether a song is High or Low there are always elements to work out. If you listen back to the song and notice that you are going off pitch a little, or something not sounding right, Go over that area of the song by itself for a while. One piece at a time. Always do this for all songs. It is part of the process of learning a song. It is easier to screw up on easy songs because you do not pay attention to them. When I recorded "All of Me" I could not complete the song in one recording. I had to take each part by itself for a while. But now I know the song a lot better and can sing it from start to finish. The ascetics may not be palatable to everyone but there are no Flips, chokes or wobbles either.
  22. Sounds good Ronws, I like it, I love It, Can't get enough of it...........You're a Highway Star........
  23. Sounds good. I could not have done better myself......That is a true statement........I tried this and failed.....
  24. I'm glad you gave this a shot Gsoul, Not bad for the first steps into the Rock world. I am going to need some LOUD time to even attempt the singing on this. I may be able to put a few guitar parts down in a few days. I have a few thoughts on how I want to attack this.....It sure sounds like fun.......Can't wait to get started.....
