  1.    When I sing I usually have the scene running through my head like it is happening to me. So a line like "you drawing me in and Kicking me out" gives a gut reaction to me. I feel like I have been tricked or sucker punched so I try to sing it that way.    I also sing songs that I have a personal connection to, "All of Me".....Been there...Done that.....
  2.    Thanks GSoul, Pronunciation is something I have trouble with really, especially in singing. For plain speaking I am right in the middle of Baltimore and pennsylvania Dutch country add to that North carolina and virginia influences......quite a mixture. Americans have it bad enough with dipthongs, Try tripthongs and quadrathongs on words like "This" Looks simple but comes out like "The-ih-us". It comes in handy some times when a little run or embelishment is called for like with Elton John's "Daniel"....."Headin' for Speh-ih-ah -ehn" All I have to do is pronounce Spain like I normally do and that run is there.    Having an RnB background do you believe the RnB sound is from a firmer closure on the vocal folds? My description above was not quite accurate, I am singing soft like in an intimate conversation yet loud enough to be heard. It seems that DStarr has a firm closure and more compression and support. You can even hear the breath escape in a little gasp between phrases, sort of like Michael Jackson in "Billy Jean". Just curious.
  3.     Thanks for listening.  I decided to stick with the piano track Because it is out of my comfort zone.    I wasn't trying to sound like John or anything like that but I was hoping to kickstart some vibrato. Didn't Happen.    I think part of the difference between me and typical RnB guy is that I was singing this with a kind of airy sound to get a smooth laid back feel/sound.   The last few guys like Dstarr and OldPainless had a more firm adduction but also had maybe a fry sound to get that coolness where I was using air. Their vibrato sounded awesome.   Anyway, I am learning and you pay attention more when you have to work at it.
  4.    The competition is tough, and getting tougher.....Great Job OldPainless, Loved that vibrato..... I am afraid that I will not be getting that hug from Jens   I just have no vibrato to speak of but I had a great time working on this. Thank you Elvis for suggesting this and thank you Felipe for putting it into action.      My Latest attempt.......
  5.      This is my latest attempt.....back to the piano backing track......This time all the way through, no dubbing and trying to fix things.....It is what it is....      Thanks for all of your suggestions and any more are welcomed........
  6. I like this. It has a sixties "Mama's and Papa's" feel to it.
  7.   D.Starr, When you get around to singing this for real with the backup it will sound awesome.   Any little wobbles and such right now are because you are recording quick and not really concentrating because it is just a quick example.   I really like the tone that you have to your voice. Let's hear the whole song with proper backing.
  8.     I would like a third opinion on this. I can definitely be wrong and if I am it could explain some of my own problems but I do believe the first attempt of mrno1324 is the proper pitch only using a lighter phonation. The second attempt is an octave lower.     Any else want to chime in?  Please if I am mistaken explain why so myself and mrno1324 can understand the difference.
  9.     The first one is on pitch with what Mick is singing. You are singing light and soft, the sound is thinner. Mick is singing louder and more of his vocal folds are vibrating.      Edit:   It is a natural thing we all have gone through the same issues. Training and building our voices will get us there.
  10.      Smooth voice G. Sorry it took so long for me to realize you posted this. That falsetto is awesome.
  11. Thanks for joining George, Great Job. It has been real interesting to hear all the different styles and strategies for singing this song. I am glad that Elvis suggested this.
  12.    Very true. If you look over the years in music you will find that many of the top songs in any given era are remakes of an earlier hit. "Older music" is constantly being made "New Music".
  13.      There are quite a few songs that I thought about recording to post, then changed my mind thinking no one would know them or like them. A few days later I would see them in the list of new Posts here. "You're Sixteen" was one of them.  "Country Roads" was another. Add to that "Sunday Morning Comin" Down" and "Rockin' Robin" from a few years ago...     They don't call them "Oldies but Goodies" for nothin'.
  14.   This is a better example. Pretty much the whole song.
  15.    Ron hit it on the Head...... Blackfoot....Train,Train......Molly Hatchet "flirtin with disaster".......Marshall Tucker ."Can't you see"  Pretty Much any southern Rock group does that Growly thing when going to the "Head Voice" area of G4 - C5.   Even John Mellencamp  uses it......    It is different from the distortion of Metal.   A lot of the old Blues men use it too.    Stevie Wonder gets that growl every now and then......Mountain, "Mississippi Queen"   Love that song. More Cow bell please.
  16.     Believe me if I could belt I would have. I have noticed that when those southern rock guys sing above G4 they get this cool growl and they are up there. I never figured out how they do it. Even those on this forum with awesome voices go for the falsetto/headvoice belt not the fat growl. Any one know how it is done?
  17.    It's funny how much nerve racking, time consuming work goes into a Comfortable sound.
  18.      I sang the vocals after adding the Rhythm guitar and before adding the lead. Although I had to fix some of the vocals afterwards anyway.      I am using earbuds but they are loose enough to hear my voice from the outside also. Not too much different that just using one side of headphones.     My first try I played a clean rhythm guitar and that was too slow and countrified. Second recording was trying to get close to Johns feel. It was a little better.     I am still flat in places and I tried too hard to add distortion or rasp in the first verse but I think I like my tone in the second verse.     My falsetto sucks.     Thanks for listening.
  19.     Thanks GSoul, I liked your version. You have a better voice for this than I do.    I wasn't going to post this yet because the guitars are too tinny sounding. My neck pickup comes and goes and this time it went.   So I was just playing around trying to get the feel for it. The mixing sucks more than I wanted also. The Voice? Well that's why I am here.  Any tips are helpful and taken seriously.    I used Felipe's piano track and added a few Guitars.
  20.    Not too bad Real. The falsetto sounded great believe it or not.  The main thing about the lower part is just being a little too light. Most likely from being the first time you recorded anything.   Cool. Thanks for joining.     Edit: let me clarify this a little.....You are not singing too light for this song.....those little wobbles were from singing light and not holding on to the note.
  21.    Sounds great D. Glad you decided to join this little challenge.
  22.     You were a little flat in places, but as you said it was raw and singing to an iphone.  I recorded the thing at least 20 times and I  am still flat in places.
