Olem got a reaction from Xamedhi in Breaking the law by Judas Priest
    Thanx for listening, guys!
Musikman: Yes, you are right, sometimes i pull too much chest up there in the G4-B4 area.
Ron: Yes, that is a useful tip which i will try to remember.
Xamedhi: I have a taste for chesty rock singers like Bruce Dickinson and Tobias Sammet for exemple ybut find it very fatiguing to sing Iron Maiden songs. That is why i try to sing Judas Priest mostly , Rob Halford uses more of a lighter mix in the upper range and it is easier for me than singing Iron Maiden sings. Note "easier", it is not easy of course. This song, though, is really tough, it is right at the passagio.
Jeremy: Actually i have sung "Screaming for vengeance" a couple of times - a tough song as well.

Ok, I just posted a song by Billy Joel where I mentioned not focusing on the "Money Notes" now this song is the opposite lol. I love Journey and Steve Perry but my voice has always had a hard time doing his material primarily because he sings in MY passagio area almost EXCLUSIVELY yikes! Anyway it has taken me lots of years of practice to get the control and support to sing this song. This recording is not perfect and I am NOT Steve Perry but I was really trying to capture the Color and Flavor of what he does with his voice.

Did this one today, this is a challenging song in many ways for me. I'm trying to use this song to strengthen headvoice and deepen the headvoice placement, relying more on CT muscle or whatever is going on (leaning into headvoice instead of chest), and letting the TA relax more. So easily this becomes shouting and full power, I try not to. Also trying to manage the abundance of words and consonants

    What do you guys think?

Dickinson does a lot of that. He pulls a lot of lyrics from movies or history. The guy isn't a stupid heavy metal singer... he is actually quite an intellectual. He is a licensed airline pilot for Quantus Airlines, a competition fencer, and historian.
Here is another one, "Alexander The Great", tells the story of Alexander The Great... these lyrics are real people, real events, real history.
This is an Epic tune... it comes from the lesser known album, "Somewhere In Time"... it doesn't get as much press as the other albums, but I think it is one of their best albums because it experimented with a softer mix, less guitar and more textures. Fist and only album they did with keyboards. Killer vocals!!!

    Lyrics:

"My son ask for thyself another
Kingdom, for that which I leave
    is too small for thee"
    (King Philip of Macedonia - 339 B.C.)

    Near to the east
In a part of ancient Greece
In an ancient land called Macedonia
    Was born a son
    To Philip of Macedon
The legend his name was Alexander

    At the age of nineteen
    He became the Macedon King
And he swore to free all of Asia Minor
    By the Aegean Sea
    In 334 B.C.
He utterly beat the armies of Persia

    [Chorus:]
    Alexander the Great
His name struck fear into hearts of men
    Alexander the Great
Became a legend 'mongst mortal men

    King Darius the third
    Defeated fled Persia
The Scythians fell by the river Jaxartes
Then Egypt fell to the Macedon King as well
And he founded the city called Alexandria

    By the Tigris river
    He met King Darius again
And crushed him again in the battle of Arbela
    Entering Babylon
    And Susa, treasures he found
Took Persepolis the capital of Persia

    [Chorus:]
    Alexander the Great
His name struck fear into hearts of men
    Alexander the Great
Became a God amongst mortal men

A Phrygian King had bound a chariot yoke
And Alexander cut the 'Gordian knot'
And legend said that who untied the knot
He would become the master of Asia

Hellenism he spread far and wide
    The Macedonian learned mind
Their culture was a western way of life
He paved the way for Christianity

    Marching on, marching on
The battle weary marching side by side
    Alexander's army line by line
They wouldn't follow him to India
Tired of the combat, pain and the glory

    Alexander the Great
His name struck fear into hearts of men
    Alexander the Great
He died of fever in Babylon

    Hey Elvis.
I will mirror some other comments here - this version sounds "unsure" like you're not quite sure how to sing the song. Remember - it takes about 10 times singing a song before you feel completely at ease. I can hear your uneasiness; especially on the notes when you go flat.

    Fear = hesitation = failure.
Recording can be an intimidating, cold and uninspiring chore. Like anything else in life, the more you do it the more comfortable it becomes. The more you figure out how to do it.

You're tone is good, you just sound like you lack confidence. Practice the song until you're sick of it. Leave it alone for a couple of days, then go back and sing it again. You'll be surprised how much more confident you'll be.

I liked it very much. This tune doesn't rock that much IMO, it has more of a psychedelic "high on drugs" feel to it so i think your laid back voice suited this song well.

Folks... I don't think this is a competition. If its a competition, it won't succeed. People won't "compete"... this is not about competing... it about learning and getting a review on your singing, ... but at the same time, comparing your version to others, learning from others how they got through it, learning how to make home recordings and to "challenge" yourself, not each other...

Ok guys... this is a great idea. Thanks GSoul for coming around to the obvious... I seems this is where this whole "Challenge" idea is destined to go and the reasons why this is valuable to the community and each of us is so numerous, we can't even list it. So, yes... I think this is a "real deal" project that puts some real mojo into what we are doing here and ... what we SHOULD be doing here.
    Some Guidance:
Someone has to own it. Someone needs to manage this and make sure that each month, there is a new challenge, that the challenge is reasonable for most people, that they hit the timelines/deadlines, etc... and that that person moderates the challenge. I would be happy to give this person Moderator status if they do not already have it, to help you to manage the traffic.... so the first thing we need to make this a reality is someone needs to step up and own it. I just don't have the time guys... Im already buried in other things that have to get done on this site, and my own TVS product development and... trying find time to sing with the rest of you on top of all that. I can't do this, someone has to lead this initiative.
I would not try to get too narrow on genres. It like trying to define all the shades of blue... this is a slippery slope you will never get out of. Just keep the genre's fairly broad and pick a song that generally is considered to be in that genre. For example, I really don't perceive "Metal" to be different the "Rock". Isn't Metal really just a sub-form of "Rock"? If not, fine... but you get my point. We don't need "Metal" and then "Screamo" and then "Classic Metal" and then "Prog Metal"... you get my point, that will never end... keep it tight to 6 - 8 top tier genres... forget about trying to define sub-genres.
This is really an extension of the popular "Review My Singing" forum that is going on in here. It might be best if you post the challenges under "Review My Singing"... and that being the case... this is less about showing off, and probably more about getting feedback on your singing, understanding a new style, and even recording production! This will force people to make recordings... which is a whole other set of know-how and art form... which is one thing that makes this idea cool. If forces people to learn how to make home recordings. Therefore, people should also share and discuss production elements, plug-ins, preamps, microphones, DAWs, etc... to make this an even broader educational experience.
Whom ever is managing this... consider making a poll. Post a poll and anchor anchor it to the top of the forum that simply asks what genre's people want to do... that will be helpful to pick songs that everyone will participate in. Everyone has the ability to make polls on this forum.
You could conceivably make it more gamey too... by posting a poll at the end of each Challenge that allows the community to may anonymous votes on which version they liked the most. The winner could get something... I don't know what yet, but perhaps a free listing on the Directory, or warm up scale from me and Daniel... or something like that.
Have fun with this and drive all the way through... lets make this real. Its one of the best ideas I have seen in a long time. Keep me posted on what you want to do and who will manage it... have a plan. Don't just post a good idea... be prepared with a plan and manage it.

I've been talking to a few people about this. The All of Me Challenge has been something really cool that brought the forum together. It's been nice to see people come out of their comfort zone and attempt something that they aren't used to attempting, whether they tried to sing the song R&B style or they took the song and tried to sing it in a way that feels natural to themselves. Both of these tasks are tricky things to do.

I thought it would be pretty cool if we did this every month. We could vote on a genre each month and choose a song to attempt. Each month would be a different genre. Also, it's important to note that this isn't a contest where somebody wins at the end. Think of it as a forum-wide project where everyone will be approaching something new quite often. You may even find something new in your voice that you like while trying to attempt the monthly challenge. So, who's interested?

We would start in May, but it's important to make a topic about a week beforehand so that we have time to deal with genre selection and song selection, which might be a tricky decision to make in itself. We may have to use some random song finder that will find songs in a particular genre.
I'm thinking maybe even use one of those radio apps that will find songs from the genre you want to listen to.

This month, we already did R&B, so lets find something else.
