Adolph Namlik reacted to Robert Lunte in The Four Pillars of Singing - Warm up for cold weather
    Hi Rodrigo,

1). The warm ups in The Foundation Building Routine progressively guide the voice through the process of healing and transforming from a "bottom-up", throaty and grindy speech mode configuration for most people... into a lighter, high performance, twang-like configuration that resonates more in the palette and pharynx.  speaking voice > singing voice.  Only doing lip trills is the equivalent of only doing Track & Track... but without the benefit of the laryngeal tilt (twang) that resonant tracking (TVS /m/, /n/, /ng/) provides. Which is the benefit of resonant tracking over lip trills. Lip trills do a nice job of keeping the larynx balanced, but resonant tracking or nasal consonant buzzing in "Pillars" trains the voice into a soft, preliminary twang configuration, in addition to the sub-glottal (below) and supra-glottal (above) balance of respiration pressure in the vocal tract. (Some of the physics in singing...).

2). I don't think that cold weather really is the culprit. To blame your voice issues on the temperature outside or the weather is a bit unfounded... not proven to be a situation that affects people. I think you may be blaming the weather on a problem that is coming form another place. If I could hear your voice, I could diagnose better to confirm my suspicions. Why blame the weather first, before blaming issues that 99% of all singers deal with. Don't chase ghosts.

3). Get past Module 2 of the FBR.. the resonant tracking is important for sure, but you need to get on with working the other onsets and start putting that healthy voice on the move with sirens, other workouts and real songs!

4). No, you can't get tea like this in the store... that is my point in creating Singer's Tea & The Vocal Inhaler. It is specially made for singers. The stuff you get at the store is not, and its dry, has chemicals in it, etc... its just not the same thing.

Ok the reverb or no reverb doesn't matter to me

Sounds like you think it is higher than it is, start the note in your head more, prepare it before you sing it. Get on top of it, let it roll out more and support you need less air and more focus, support but not with the throat. Picture the music in your head and let it crescendo slightly like waves. It sounds like your trying to thin it, unless your natural voice is thin, you need to do it differently. It's a little guttural and that is a more lyrical piece.

There is a post in here on how Steve Perry sings, if you want it thinner follow that instruction and lighten it up the right way.

Hey Giacomo, thanks for posting this... It is really a treat for me to hear my students, especially if it is a "before" vs "after" presentation... and helpful for others to hear as well... and thanks for the "shout out" regarding "The Four Pillars of Singing"... I am thrilled to learn that its helping you and that you are a happy customer... that inspires me to keep going and keep making it better and better...

    Regarding your song:

Wow cool!  I love the funky groove... so cool!

A very nice heady sound color... nice light mass grooves!

I would maybe suggest that you add a touch more compression on a few moments in the song for dynamic contrast, but other then that, I think this really sounds great. Nice Work... I also think this is a good example of how "The Four Pillars of Singing" is not just for rockers and belters... it is techniques that can help anyone with any style of singing... an important point.

Im going to add your song to my "TVS Student Performances" playlist on my YouTube Channel!

By the way, where are you from?  Are you in Italy?

Robert thank you for adding my song on your playlist, that's really nice of you! Yes I'm from Cagliari in Sardinia (Italy). I've been training religiously since July with your program..and yes it's not just for rockers and belters! Thank you for your suggestions, I will keep on working...

    Rodrigo,

Welcome to our forum and welcome to TVS, it is great to have you as a client.

You own "The Four Pillars of Singing" and are asking about a warm up?

Well,... please see Module 1 of your Foundation Building Routine.... "Establishing the Resonant Track"... the first three exercises of the program are the pure warm-up content.  With the more recent updates, you would also warm up your bridging positions, work on vowel modifications and you would do resistance training for belting.

In regards to tea for singers... I actually invented some tea for singers... it works great!  This is not just some store bought tea that I'm selling as "tea for singers"... I wouldn't do that. This tea was actually created with the help of a herbal tea expert. We worked on the formula for 90 days until we got it right. I sell about 50 bags of this tea a month to people all over the world. This is tea, made by singers (me), for singers.. its the real deal.

Labrinth is one of my favorite artist, so much respect for him. When I heard this song, I fall in love. I think the words are so powerful and emotional...and as I think you have already know, I love the emotional, passion, sentimental songs. So I decided to cover it! Hope you like it!  Thank you, Memi. ❤ '>

Hi Will, I just saw this... sorry I couldn't respond earlier. Its been crazy building updates to Pillars 4.0.

Well, I listened to your 2nd version...

I like it... I think it sounds quite good actually. If this was mixed into a full band with great pre-amps, compression, and all the special sauce that comes with a full production, it would sound really good. I don't feel your voice sounds squeezed. I think this more attributed to your sound color. We can train to add more warmth to your sound color with better larynx anchoring and other considerations, but you have a great Ian Gillan kind of timbre... great for rock.

How has your training with "The Four Pillars of Singing" been going? Do you have any questions?  There are some new updates you may be interested in....  I like to keep my clients updated.

Hi Robert, thank you very much - that really means a lot, especially coming from yourself. I love Ian Gillan too so if I sound anything like him then I'll gladly take that as a compliment!

Training with Four Pillars has been really beneficial, it's an amazing programme. I have mainly used it by working through as many of the Vocalize Demonstrations (which I have on my iPod) as time will allow. I probably now need to use it in a more organized way as your book directs, but I have been doing the Foundation Building Routine at the beginning a lot, and it has really helped a lot in opening up my range and finding head voice properly.

I am certainly interested in any updates, or if you have advice as to which specific exercises from Pillars that might be the most beneficial in helping build strength and stamina in a more 'belty' configuration in that higher part of the range (particularly between the G4 and C5), for the Dio/Gillan/Dickinson powerful sound. I find that at the moment I can find it for a while but my stamina and/or strength needs working on somewhat.

Thank you again Robert, I really appreciate your comments.

Thank you for your advice and kind words, I think one of the problems I have with the voice is psychological, I have been training the voice for some time, I have times that I was singing and that my voice was effortless, other times it seems I have to strain to reach the notes, I think that Robert is  completely right when he speaks about  learning on take the voice through the bridges, I'm concentrate on that now, and I'm doing some sirens exercices, for a while and possibly will buy the program The Four Pillars of Singing
    thanks a lot

    Mateus,

This community REALLY knows what they are talking about. If it isn't from a coach and author of voice training techniques like myself, it is at least a person like "Killer" that has been singing and training for years. Most of these guys know a LOT about training and the voice. This is the real deal in here.

Clasification doesent matter at all in pop singing. Its only for operatic stuff because u need resonance for people to hear you. I know what you are thinking, if im tenor i can hit high notes, and the truth is it doesent matter. Geoff tate is baritone and is singing deep inside the fifth octave, founder of TMV forum Robert Lunte is Baritone and he is belting F5.

Dont get caught on classifications and start working bro :)

Thank you guys and thank you Robert. Yea, she has a really aggressive voice. She's a huge influence on my vocal style. Bonnie Raitt is fantastic too. Other singers I love, Anne Wilson and Karen Carpenter.

I had many voice coaches who told me I couldn't sing this way and I'm so glad that I didn't listen to them

Both were good and I really liked "I want to come over." As good or better than the original.

I read some interviews with Melissa, once. Often, when recording, she would still track, even when having a cold. And that would add some more grit to her sound, which she would use on the album.

    Anyway, good stuff, Lauren.

I've never paid that much attention to Melissa Etheridge, but you rock. You've got lots of raw energy and are explosive. It's rare in female vocalists that will just explode like that. Well it's rare in male vocalists too, but yeah.

It rocks. I think I like your better than Melissa Etheridge. You're just less constrained, more explosive, and like you're willing to 'go there' wherever there is. Howling, screaming, whispering, raspy, clean, loud, quiet, whatever. 'There' sounds like a feeling. An emotion, and you go there.

    Primal, good stuff.

I love it when a female singer has depth to her voice. Doesnt just sound like another mickey mouse screecher.

She has alot of cool over tones in her voice, power, and cool style. To her, YOU SOUND GREAT... To Robert, good job with your guidance, hope the momentum keeps going.

I've had problems like that, too. Messed up guitars and whatnot. As for study programs, there are many available and I could certainly recommend 4 Pillars of Singing, available at this forum by the owner of the forum and author of the singing program. If you have some money to spend on a training program, it is the best deal for the money, in my opinion, though most importantly, what is important is that the teaching style and concepts work for you.
