Thank you both very much ☺️
I get Florence or Sarah McLachlan quite a lot so I was expecting someone to make the comparison :P

I was going to tell you to clean up the ah but you did that in the second half, especially the louder part. At first, you were rolling forward toward aw which was having an odd tuning effect.

And your articulation got better in the second half, as well. That happens to me, too. I start out ill-fitting and then fine my place, later and get in the groove. So, maybe we can learn, together, to get the vowel right from the start.

I was not familiar with the song all that much but your version lets me know it's a good song and I am not concerned with hearing the original. I like the song just from you singing it.

And go ahead and comment on Java's cover. So far, I am the only one to do so and I am not an expert. Here is why your input is valuable. Because you are part of the audience.

It doesn't matter how technically awesome we are, or are not. Because the audience responds, or they don't.

A few times, someone has told me I am pitchy somewhere. And 9 times out of 10, I was not but it sounded odd to them. And the repeated listening led me to a spot where I really was pitchy and no one caught it, so, I still learned. And just about everytime I was pitchy or the intonation was odd was because it was a "dirty" vowel sound and cleaning it up solved the problem.

Plus, believe it or not, I am learning how to record and post-edit, which is just as important a skill as the singing. I can't be there to hear you sing this in the same room. And you cannot be here to physically hear me abusing the guitar and a song in person. All we have are these recordings we share with each other. So, how it is recorded and edited makes a difference.

But actually the original also sometimes perform live in acoustic version for this song, and i really love it because he sings without any screaming part, plus i cant scream Anyway thanks for the feedback.

Oh ya you did a great job on the drop of jupiter, i even thinking to try cover that song next because your singing really inspired me. i dont have much knowledge in singing and you're too good to be judged by me so im scare to drop any feedback :P

Your mix reminded me of the one I did for myself on "I Don't Believe in Love." I bit wooly and indistinct. Your singing was good and you've got more meat in the voice than the original singer, which I think is cool. But the vocals sounded like they were clipping.

Others have wisely critiqued my on me post-recording editing. And I am still learning. So, what I am saying is that I liked your singing and from what I could hear, you have great articulation.

Terrible...sounded like two cats screwing on a tin roof.

Actually it was great. I just wanted to be that one ass hole on youtube that hit dislike for no reason, besides being an insecure, self hating, d#%# hole ha ha.

Once again though, awesome cover, great tone. Maybe you can quit your day job....unless your day job is singing, then dont quit lol.

Thank you Javastorm, I really appreciate the compliments. It has taken me a good while to build up to that kind of head voice control. I actually have a fairly deep voice

Ok... so here this goes. My name is Lia and I am from Greece. I am 32 years old and have been singing since I can remember. Now I say singing because everyone sings . But my friends, family you know people who care for me always said I could sing. But... my confidence was never in the right place to go to a professional who could actually tell me if I  sound normal or like a cat screetching.
From what I know and as much as I can understand from reading and looking around my lows are from a D4-F3 and my highs a C4-C5 (btw I know nothing about music and ranges so forgive me for being clueless)
I used to sing as a teen in choirs but was never in front since my stage fright always kept me back and by that I mean full blown "I think I might as well faint". My mics are a joke but I did my best with this cover of Whitney Houstons's The Greatest Love of All (rest her soul, I hope I havent completely murdered this masterpiece)
Seriously, be honest so I can either do something about it or let it rest and just sing to my friends and leave the rest of the world alone thank you so much in advance to everyone.
I hope this link works too. https://soundcloud.com/liak-2/the-greatest-love-of-all

    Thanks for the input, Java!!

Yeah, in a lot of places it sounds constricted, mostly because I'm not used to sing that low, and I haven't trained to relax in there and open while keeping the compression Work in progress, though :B  Thanks for the idea in "sobriety" I tried that early in the morning when I recorded again. I actually forget sometimes that I can modify vowels in lower ranges haha
I'm not currently in my place, once I get home I'll take the best shots and post them, I think they sound much better
Thanks about Forever and One... btw how did you all find the mix of that track? It seems to me that in the last chorus, the voice is kind of lost because the music's louder...

That was a pretty good vocal day, so I feel like I shouldn't take all the credit haha  I'm training a lot to be able to sing songs like F&O in a consistent way. It's one of those songs that I can sing just one time and that's it, then just warm down and rest.
( It's not like I end up swollen or something hahah  It's just that it's a good enough workout on top of  other songs I may sing, my scales and stuff )

I liked it, too. And was struck by the interesting notion that on this song, you kind of sound like Dennis DeYoung.
Kudos for NOT trying to sounding dusty, like Don does. As for his original phrasing, it might help to know that he is from, and still lives mostly in Dallas, Texas. I know because the company I work for worked on a project for his newest house (he has four, here.)

Hey guys, I'm posting this as a sort of "hey all, long time no see, I'm doing well" hahah EDIT :Also, I don't ask for critique or review, I'm just showing what I've been doing for others who want to listen or study.
I think someone posting about what they think the distortion is, or how it compares to theirs does not help my singing directly. I repeat myself "I posted this as a "hey all, this is what I've been doing" because the "tell your gains" thread is dead. If after this clarification my thread still belongs here, then I'm ok with that, but I just wanted to make it clear. I just wanted to debate singing and technique in general, or whatever someone wanted to ask ( about my vocal fold gap, reflux, etc ), cheers everyone!  .

I've been working hard on my voice as always, carrying weight up and my headvoice twangy range.  My max weight is on B4 and headvoice range topping on E5 on good days, with a solid D#5. I have a vocal fold gap ( acording to my stroboscopy on 2015 ) and I don't know the current state of it. It's a lot better, sound, strength and stamina has gotten waaay better. I still feel my voice a lot different though, I don't know if its because of the vocalis muscle that's grown stronger or what, but I wouldn't give up the stability of my voice now or my sound, for the flexibility or -strained- range I had before ( 2014-2015 )

Well, I come to tell you guys... I at last found some kind of distortion that feels healthy in my voice, and is sustainable.
I've tried the "throat singing" type of distortion ( false folds and cartilage, Hetfield style ) but it hurts and always leaves me with air leak and poor stamina for days or a week or two, even.
I've tried creaking distortion but as I already mentioned, my voice is kind of f***ed up in some way, and I don't know if it's normal but I have a hard time coordinating fry, lol. and when I manage, it leaves my voice very worn out if done for 20 minutes.

This kind of distortion I found is probably like the rattle described in CVT terms ( kind of what Jorn Lande does most of the time ), where something ( I think arytenoid cartilage ? ) vibrates, but in a different way, I feel like the upper and side walls of my pharynx contracting, which makes something vibrate and produce this "overlay".
    I
t's still a thin grit and I have to put quite a bit of effort in it to make the walls contract enough to make the sound but I guess with time and patience the strength will come and I'll be able to put more "anger" into it coordinated with vocal weight.  I must mention that doing this distortion makes my voice last longer, stamina is better, and closure is getting better too. I feel my muscles are working out and getting stronger, and I have an easier time mixing into my upper range. All this change in a span of 5 days, so it's important to note.

I hope you guys like how it sounds, this is the fifth day since I found it, videos are from yesterday

Been working hard on getting my mixes better. This one took about a week. Good learning experience. Not perfect but im somewhat proud of it

    Approximately 80 tracks involved

Its going to be a fairly low quality upload because its an MP3 to start with and then uploaded to an MP3 site
On The Inside, scratch full mix #1

EDIT: Rebalanced mix, much better On the Inside, rebalanced mix#1

    Enjoy, JJ

Your tone gave me goosebumps a few times in the beginning.  I can hear you have a strong chest voice but were holding back from breaking into head voice during this song which is a good objective but you need just a little bit more support for some of the belts.  As far as sounding like Micheal Bolton goes you nailed that nail straight on the head but your lack of control took me out of the song a couple times.  As soon as you get more command over your voice I would listen to your songs on the daily.

Javastorm, your songs are always a favorite of mine. I really wish I had a "Manly" voice haha but I have a fairly bright tone and even when I sing lower it always cuts a bit and I have to work at warming it up to my liking. Great job on this tune btw, very emotive and sung with fantastic urgency. Love the tag lines at the 4 min mark.
