First timer attempts Rainbow - Catch the Rainbow
ronws replied to Anthony's topic in REVIEW YOUR SINGING - SHARE YOUR SINGING
Technically, brazilians speak Portugeuse but it is a latin language. To me, it sounds like european spanish, not castillian but with that kind of cadence. And it sounds different than the columbian accent, which sounds a little more central american. However, some of those accents can vary. I worked with a guy from Honduras and he had a european accent but I think that was from education. I have a crew member at work who is from El Salvador and he sounds like a spanish version of Christopher Walken. "Yo necessito mas cowbell!" The other guys on our crews are from Mexico but their accents are different depending on what region and amount of education. The service tech is from Guadalajara but he speaks slowly and clearly, almost classically. Another guy, I call him a hillbilly because he is from the mountains and has an accent so thick, even in spanish, others have a challenge understanding him. His ah sound is what I would call "straight up." One of my bosses (two owners of the company) has a wife who is from Bolivia. And she sounds "tex-mex" when she speaks in spanish. I have a bit of a handle on the midlands accent in England with good examples like Glenn Hughes and Tony Iommi. Though culture might affect accent, too. Rob Halford is from the midlands but he can sound liverpudlian at times. And my friend, Heath, from Manchester, sounded almost scottish when I first met him. But he is british-born, served as an SAS sniper in Bosnia.- 28 replies

First timer attempts Rainbow - Catch the Rainbow

I understand. Well, certainly continue the hand on the abs, as it reminds you of where motion should be. I don't to say that it was a bad thing, just something I noticed but if it is helping you do the right thing with breath management, by all means, keep doing that. It's a good place to start from ,little things that keep your alignment where it should be. As for accents, they are like music to me. I can tell if a guy is from Mexico, Central America, like El Savador or Honduras, or south America, something a lot of gringos can't do. To them, all speakers of spanish sound the same. But I hear accents like others hear notes.- 28 replies

Please Review My Music. Thanks!
ronws replied to Nu Camber's topic in REVIEW YOUR SINGING - SHARE YOUR SINGING
Another little side note. We singers here are a proud lot. We often reject the use of autotune, though some pop music relies heavily on it as a part of the genre. We like the idea that we can sing with good pitch without using digital correction. -
June 2015 Monthly Jazz Challenge: Autumn Leaves

You're doing fine G Soul. Getting musicians, even singers, to some times agree or do something can be like herding cats. So, most times, you just start walking and the cats will follow in front of you. And great job, Killer, on the Autumn Leaves cover. -

I think you did mention this to me before. You said she was tall. Yeah, especially with her heels and her hair done up. -

Lovely accent. Reminds me of a friend who was here in the states for a while and moved back to Manchester. (And I assume he is still a fan of Manchester United.) Anyway, you are singing out of your throat. A few times, you did approach a mix, which is what you need. And yes, it can be built, through resonance. Try different mouth shapes, mostly through the pure vowels, until you feel pockets that make your head ring. Also, you are singing the lyrics as if you were speaking them. Change that. For example, on "wheel," you have too much motion of the lips. Make the w almost imperceptible and less power on the l. Like w EEE l. Something I have noticed in northern England and even scottish accents is an oo sound for the what would be oh in american english. Nothing wrong with that. oo is a pure vowel but you will want to do it without pursed lips. Also, I noticed, when you go to higher notes (without the guitar in place,) you place your hand on your abs. It may be distracting you. Yes, any major action should be in the abs not the chest or ribcage, but only subtly so. Anyway, a slight smile aids in brightening the sound, which is what you need. Lips barely meet. In fact, you should form vowels at the back of the tongue. And you can use a vowel shape as a "formant." The articulation of the lyrics will give the context. So, even if you were using ee as a shape and the word was love, it would still be interpreted as love, though you were shaping ee for a bright spot, as an example. Awesome dogged determination.- 28 replies

Random picker made an excellent choice. I like Nat. And during my days of security work and bodyguard stuff, I got to meet his daughter, Natalie and was her bodyguard for an evening. Nothing as dramatic as Kevin Costner, but she did step on my left boot, by accident. The club where she was performing was crowded. -

Evanescence - "My Immortal" Cover
ronws replied to pumpkin13's topic in REVIEW YOUR SINGING - SHARE YOUR SINGING
Because that is the difference in playback devices. Sadly, we do have to consider that others will only hear us on wireless devices, and not even through their own desktop, which could have a decent set of speakers. I used to use Audacity. If you are having a timing problem, it is most times due to latency. The way to fix that is take your vocal track and choose the effect tempo change. Then, type in .01 percent. It will tighten up the whole thing. Then, choose the double headed arrow thing for cursor and move the vocal track just slightly to your left, aligning with a beat in the song. Audacity can have some atrocious latency and this is the easiest fix for it. And don't forget you have other tools. EQ, panning. You can duplicate your vocal track and apply different effects to the duplicate. Mix how much each track is prominent. -
Help! How is my voice?
ronws replied to Marshall2000's topic in REVIEW YOUR SINGING - SHARE YOUR SINGING
Yeah, I don't care about your range or getting into a debate on another board. Sing the song and don't worry what is the highest note or the lowest. What matters is how well you sing the song and if the audience likes it, not whether or not you "win" a debate. -
Don't worry about it, Dew. It's great to have as many people as possible get involved with this, but everyone knows that life can get busy at the drop of a hat, and suddenly the time isn't there. I managed to get an attempt off and tried to get a second version done, but the time wasn't there. I didn't manage to record anything with a backing track this time. I want that to be different this month, so I'm going to see if I can make that happen. Speaking of this month, it would be great if you could be a part of it. We're running two challenges this month: Jazz and Country. And it would still be nice to have you post a Highway Star cover in here. How about "Highway Star" as sung by Willie Nelson? No one has done that, yet. Little bit of that Willie walking bass run on an acoustic guitar .....

Help! How is my voice?
ronws replied to Marshall2000's topic in REVIEW YOUR SINGING - SHARE YOUR SINGING
Don't worry about genre. That's the beauty of this forum. You can get comments from people who don't necessarily follow the genre. Such as me. I think you sang well, though I don't follow Adele. Do you sound like her? No, of course not, and I really don't care. But you sang well and that should mean something, whether I have the cred to comment on adult contemporary ballad, or not. -
Feedback please - Kentucky Rain by Elvis
ronws replied to Mark Adams's topic in REVIEW YOUR SINGING - SHARE YOUR SINGING
Good stuff, Mark. "Kentucky Rain" is one of my favorite Elvis songs precisely because it has some low end. You sang better on "Homeward Bound" because of your "placement," where you were feeling the notes. If you did that with "Kentucky Rain" it would sound much more solid, even the low parts. You do both songs well. -
I agree with G. Very good, indeed.

My john lennon impersonation
ronws replied to LennonImpersonator's topic in REVIEW YOUR SINGING - SHARE YOUR SINGING
I wonder why it is that even if the instructions for signing and joining request uploading an image for avatar, many do not want to do that. Is it a matter of being defiant? And why? That is the wrong hill to die on. I used to have long hair and liked having it. Having short hair has helped me to have a better job and paycheck. And so, I cut my hair. A mountain of hair does not put food on the table unless you are Fabio. And I am not Fabio. In fact, my face scares some people. So, I have a pic of my dog, Shadow, who will be 12 next month. He is prettier than I am, which may not be saying a lot. So, I can imagine someone saying, why the big heartache to have an avatar, which could be anything, maybe some grilled lamb with mint jelly, just to post. And I would counter with, ok, why the resistance to have some kind of image so that mods and admins don't have to keep saying the same thing over and over and over, ad infinitum. Just thoughts I ponder while I wait for the a/c guy to visit. -
We could also do "Six Days On the Road" by Dave Dudley. That will stretch your lower end.

Train, Train would be good and a hit with my wife. It is her favorite song by Blackfoot and one of her favorites, in general. Just a couple of old hippies grooving along ...
